AJAX, Flash, Laszlo and FLEX2 are browser-upgrade technologies that have seen huge uptake over the last few years, with AJAX grabbing most of the attention. All of these technologies have moved the web browser several notches closer towards the rich and responsive interfaces that are possible with thick clients, but for many applications, thick client applications still hold a significant edge. A major usability roadblock for onDemand applications is that web applications are only functional when you’re online. For example, most business people would find it unacceptable if basic applications for creating documents and spreadsheets became unavailable as soon as they walked into an airplane. With the rise in popularity of SaaS, solutions are starting to show up that allow some amount of offline access to applications. One path is to hack/extend browsers, while another route is to create a new breed of online-aware applications.A simple browser solution is to create single-page AJAX/DHTML applications that can be saved to the filesystem, like TiddlyWiki. Zimbra went to the other extreme by moving the application server and application logic to the ‘client’ machine. The Open Source Dojo Offline Toolkit is another project trying to extend browser capabilities offline. The project is led by some developers from SitePen. Their goal is to create a small cross-platform generic browser plugin that enables access to web applications. It allows users to work with data even when no network connection is available. Their approach uses a small locally running web proxy that caches files needed for later access. Dojo Offline Toolkit uses the Open-Source C-based web proxy called Polipo which is small at 150K and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. Another key component is something called Dojo Storage that run on IE, Mozilla, Firefox and Safari for caching megabytes of data within the browser process.Microsoft has offered HTML Applications (HTA) that allow web applications to be distributed for use offline, but the applications are not cross-browser capable.Firefox 3 will have a feature that will add local datastores that can be accessed by applications when run offline. But the capability is limited to Firefox browsers. The Opera browser is doing something similar by allowing clients to store data in Opera widgets. To standardize these efforts, the Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG) is developing a specification for handling persistent storage and offline web applications.Non-browser-based network-aware applications are also evolving. One example is Adobe’s Apollo toolset that lets developers create applications that perform like desktop application but also are able to connect to and interact with web-based data sources.Another development tools called Slingshot lets you take a Ruby-on-Rails application and have it run offline. With so many announced projects to attack the problem of offline access by web applications, expect this capability to become more common and something which will be expected from SaaS applications. read more

But a new movie, Jobs, hitting theaters next month, may well prompt the tech sector to think about how we grew from a cluster of fruit orchards to the Information Age’s beating heart. It all comes down to the stories of the people who created the technology we all use today. In the case of Jobs, that person is Steve Jobs, the late founder and former CEO of Apple. And I’m hoping that this movie will be more than just a splashy docudrama about a significant figure in the recent history of Silicon Valley. I’m hoping it will get us all to reflect on how we build companies and products, what innovation means to us and does to us as human beings, and how we tell stories about technology.I’m going to host a screening this week in San Francisco with the movie’s star, Ashton Kutcher, who plays Jobs, and the director, Joshua Michael Stern, for some special guests. And I’m really happy to announce that a handful of ReadWrite readers will be among them. (You’ll find details on how to apply for an invitation below.)Expect a lively discussion. Hollywood’s last big take on tech, The Social Network, was controversial, especially for offering a critical characterization of a living subject, Mark Zuckerberg, and the still-young company, Facebook, that he founded. In the end, though, many of the movie’s younger viewers took the movie as an endorsement of the hacker culture that gave birth to Facebook, and the startup ideal Zuckerberg epitomized.By his own admission, Kutcher seems to have approached the role with the aim of sharing a similar message.“As I read the script I had a knot in my stomach,” he recently wrote on Quora, the question-and-answer site. “I imagined actors playing the role and not connecting to the love that went into some of the seemingly irrational decisions that Steve sometimes made. If this film becomes an enduring memory, of a man I admire, I wanted to ensure that it was portrayed by someone who cared about his legacy and took the time to represent him in a way that people who were close to Steve felt to be authentic. Will Silicon Valley insiders find this movie to be an authentic document of Steve Jobs’ life? Minister of Transport and Mining, Hon. Robert Montague, says the Government will be implementing a number of measures aimed at ensuring order on the nation’s roadways. He said that “very soon” video surveillance will be utilised to nab persons who disobey the road code.In addition, an online page will be set up for members of the public to post photos and videos of unruly motorists, particularly operators of public passenger vehicles (PPV).“Upload your clips so that the Transport Authority can take the requisite actions,” he said.He noted that “these measures are not against the good taxi and bus drivers; it is against that one per cent that is problematic”, while calling on PPV drivers to help in ridding the system of those who have no intention of changing. The Minister was delivering the keynote address at the launch of the 2019 Jamaica Driver and Traffic Safety Expo at his Maxfield Avenue offices in St. Andrew on Tuesday (May 21), where he expressed sorrow at the bus crash in Portland on Monday (May 20), which took the life of a student and caused injuries to several others.Minister of Transport and Mining, Hon. zoom Irish Continental Group plc (ICG) has placed an order with German shipbuilder Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesselschaft & Co.KG (FSG) for the construction of a cruise ferry worth EUR 165.2 million (USD 199 million). Upon completion, it will be the largest cruise ferry in the world in terms of vehicle capacity, according to ICG.The cruise ferry will be able to accommodate 1,800 passengers and crew, with capacity for 5,610 freight lane metres, which provides the capability to carry 330 freight units per sailing. Overall, it will effectively be a 50 pct increase in peak freight capacity compared to the MV Ulysses.Under the deal, the cruise ferry is scheduled for delivery before mid-2020.Twenty percent of the contract price will be paid in installments during the construction period. The balance of 80 pct will be paid on delivery. ICG said it would finance the ferry with funds from credit facilities. The new ferry will be fitted with emissions scrubber technology and ballast water systems so as to meet current and known future environmental regulations and will deliver optimal fuel consumption while minimising related costs. It will be powered by four main engines delivering 33,600 KW of power and adhere to Ice Class specification.Freight capacity will be provided over five decks, while passenger facilities will be spread over three decks. In addition, the vessel has been designed for three-tier freight bow loading to allow for efficient loading/unloading and quick turnaround times. The cruise ferry is being built specifically for Irish Ferries Dublin – Holyhead services. It is expected to replace the schedule of the MV Ulysses, which in turn will replace the currently chartered vessel MV Epsilon in the fleet. This will allow for the deployment of the W.B. Yeats (arriving mid-2018) full-time on the direct Ireland – France route alongside the MV Oscar Wilde.“This investment underpins the confidence the group has in the markets in which we operate. Alongside the recent investment in the MV W.B. Yeats, it brings our total investment to EUR 315 million for these two vessels designed for our operations on the Irish Sea. “The construction of a cruise ferry of this size will offer both additional capacity and an enhanced experience for both our tourism and freight customers. This infrastructural investment enhances “the bridge” to the UK & Continental Europe that is a vital part of the continued success of Ireland’s open economy,” Eamonn Rothwell, Chief Executive Officer, said. read more

Manchester United have announced that former youth coach Eric Harrison passed away peacefully on Wednesday night. The 81-year-old joined United as a youth coach in 1981 from Everton and famously oversaw the Class of ’92 team that consisted of the likes of David Beckham, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Ryan Giggs.Harrison also worked under another United legend in Mark Hughes as an assistant manager at Wales for four years and won an MBE for his services to football last year.Since 2014, however, Harrison had been living in a nursing home after being diagnosed with mixed dementia and died on Wednesday.“We are extremely saddened to report that our former youth coach Eric Harrison passed away last night,” read a statement on United’s Twitter.“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Eric’s family and friends at this sad and difficult time.”Also paying tribute was the legendary United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who praised Harrison’s contribution to football and labelled him one of the “greatest coaches of our time.”“Eric’s contribution to football and not just at Manchester United was incredible,” said Ferguson.“When I came as manager I was lucky enough to have Eric on the staff as head of youth development, so I got to see the work he did and not just with the Class of ’92 but with all the young players.“He built character and determination in those young players and prepared them for the future. He was a teacher, he gave these players a path, a choice and he only did that through his own hard work and sacrifice.“He was able to impart that education to the young which made him one of the greatest coaches of our time.”Former United midfielder Beckham wrote on Instagram: “We’ve lost our mentor, our coach and the man who made us.“He taught us how to play, how to never give up, how important it was to win your individual battles and what we needed to do to play for Manchester United Football Club.“He was always watching and always with us every time we played, I can still hear him telling me NO MORE HOLLYWOOD PASSES.“I can still see him as we played on The Cliff training ground looking down on us either with a proud smile or a loud bang of his fist on the window knowing any minute he would be on his way down to probably advise me in the most polite way to stop playing those passes.“More importantly he made us understand how to work hard and respect each other and not just on the pitch. We won’t forget the life lessons he gave us.“Eric we love you and owe you everything. Gary, Phil, Ryan, Paul, Nicky and David.”Liverpool legend Nicol slams Harry Maguire’s Man United form Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Steve Nicol believes Harry Maguire has made some “horrendous mistakes” recently, and has failed to find his best form since joining Manchester United.Below are some of the tributes that have been coming in today from other United greats.Eric Harrison, one of footballs greatest people has sadly passed away.
