Student Senate reflects on inaugural Walk the Walk Week
Notre Dame’s Student Senate met Wednesday evening to exchange feedback pertaining to Notre Dame’s celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and the University’s inaugural Walk the Walk Week.Senators raised concerns about the effectiveness of this year’s scheduling and potential improvements for next year.Discussion lent itself to the possibility of a University-wide holiday without class.“One big concern was faculty — are they going to come in if if they don’t have a class to teach? Same thing with the students — if you get out of bed and go to a 9 a.m. [class], you might as well go to this [Celebration] Luncheon. As opposed to [thinking], ‘It’s a three-day weekend, I’m going to go out drinking on a Sunday night,’” student body president Bryan Ricketts said.In addition to discussion of Walk The Walk Week, the Senate approved the nomination of a new Director of Gender Issues, sophomore Alex Eisele.Ricketts said he nominated Eisele for the position after a thorough interview process.“Alex has been a good friend of many of the members of Student Government. … We talked to her about her experiences with the It’s On Us Campaign and GreenDot and her involvement with that,” Ricketts said. “We were very impressed with the way that, even though she wasn’t formerly involved in student government, she really took to heart the messages of the campaign.”Members of Senate proceeded to discuss and pass sophomore Sara Dugan, Parliamentarian, as an acting and non-voting member of Judicial Council’s election committee.This order was due to the fact that Ricketts and Zach Waterson, Judicial Council president, are currently searching for a new Director of Internal Affairs, a position previously held by sophomore student body vice-presidential candidate Rebecca Blais.Dugan’s role will include impartially advising the election committee on all constitutional matters, effective immediately, due to her extensive knowledge of the student government Constitution.Junior Isabel Fox, Ryan Hall Senator, expressed concern that Dugan is Blais’s roomate, sensing a possible conflict of interest.Waterson stated that Dugan will have a “fairly minor role” and will help the election committee understand the context of the Constitution’s clauses in the case that there is a violation of election rules and procedures.Tags: student senate, study body elections, Walk the Walk Week

Epilepsy can develop after an infection or damage to the brainEpilepsy is twice as common in low and middle-income countries as it is in the developed world, according to an international team of researchers.They say the higher incidence is linked to increased risk factors, including head injuries and infections such as pork tapeworm and river blindness.And more than 60% of sufferers in those countries receive no appropriate treatment, they say in the Lancet.A Lancet editorial said epilepsy had to be a global health priority.Epilepsy is a condition in which disturbances to the brain’s normal electrical activity cause recurring seizures or brief episodes of altered consciousness. There are about 40 different types. Epilepsy is not a mental illness, but can develop after injury or damage to the brain.About 85% of the global burden of epilepsy occurs in low and middle-income countries.‘Bewitched’Writing in the Lancet, researchers led by Prof Charles Newton, of the University of Oxford, say the death rate in developing countries is much higher than in developed ones – and that the reason for this is likely to be a failure to treat people with the condition.Prof Newton said: “The burden of epilepsy in these regions is at least double that found in high-income countries, and sadly, adequate facilities for diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management of epilepsy are virtually non-existent in many of the world’s poorest regions.”He added: “Many people with epilepsy or their families do not even know that they have a disorder that can be controlled with biomedical treatment, so it is vitally important that awareness is raised and medical care improved in these regions.”Medications are available – but there can be problems distributing them, especially to remote areas.The researchers say there are low-cost ways of improving the situation and of reducing the stigma often faced by people with epilepsy and their families – such as working with traditional healers and awareness campaigns to increase understanding of the condition.In some countries, traditional beliefs about the causes of the condition, including bewitchment, spiritual causes and curses, lead to stigma and increase the chance that a person with epilepsy will not get the treatment they need.A Lancet editorial adds: “Given the prevalence of epilepsy globally, it should be included as a priority on the public health agenda, and access to treatment should be greatly improved in developing countries.“It is time for all governments to take epilepsy more seriously.”BBC News HealthLifestyle Epilepsy ‘global health problem’ by: – September 28, 2012 Share
Ultimate Crew during a practice session. For the first time Dominica will be represented at the International Caraip-hop festival in Martinique. The island will be represented by dancers Ghandi Robin, Marvin Carbon and David Durant of Dominica, a group of male performers called Ultimatum Crew formerly known as B-Boyz.The festival takes place from the 11th to the 14th of January 2012, at the Departmental Cultural Centre (Atrium) stadium in Fort de France.
