Science Centre NEMOThis gadget-filled paradise isn’t just for children – it’s for big kids, too, with all aspects of science covered. Make giant soap bubbles in a laboratory, produce videos in the media lab or solve a murder mystery using DNA technology: you can easily spend a whole day running giddily around the corridors. The place is huge, with several cafes and a large outdoor terrace which is the perfect place for a pit stop when the sun’s shining. The Hermitage MuseumVisit this palatial building for the jaw-dropping collection of art or just to pause for thought in the secluded internal courtyard. You’re unlikely to see the same exhibit more than once, because the collection is constantly being refreshed with new exhibits loaned by the original Hermitage museum in St Petersburg. Gaze at everything from grand group portraits from Golden Age names like Pickenoy to new ideas like a whole gallery dedicated to ‘Outsider Art’, usually made by those with no formal art education, or who use art as an expression of mental health issues. When it’s time for a breather, head to the Neva, the in-house café overlooking ornate landscaped gardens.Opening times: Daily between 10am and 5pm, excluding public holidays.Price: Adults €17.50, children (up to 11 years) freeHow to get there: It’s on Amstel 51. It’s easy to get there on foot, but if you’re short on time, take tram nine or 14 from the city centre and get off at the Waterlooplein stopDon’t miss: Spanish Masters, the current exhibition of work (until 29 May 2016) by greats like Goya and Velázquez. Expect masterpieces galore. 7. The Anne Frank HouseAlthough perhaps not Amsterdam’s cheeriest attraction, the Anne Frank House is one which will stay with you, long after you’ve left its memory-touched walls. This building is where Anne lived with her family for two years, hidden away in a tiny room accessed by a secret door. Anne might be long gone, but her diary and notebooks are here for all to see, as is a selection of objects belonging to both her family and the people who helped keep her presence a secret. It’s a tough but essential stop-off for anyone visiting Amsterdam, and one which tends to get crowded, so visit later in the day and book online before you go if possible. Opening times: Opening times vary, so consult the website, but generally it’s open from 9am until 7pm every day, apart from on Saturdays when it closes at 9pm Price: Adults €9, children freeHow to get there: The Anne Frank House is situated in the centre of Amsterdam at PrinsengrachtDon’t miss: The documentary film featuring 22 famous figures including writers and actors like Emma Thompson, on how Anne’s story has impacted them And if you want to see more of Amsterdam’s top attractions, scroll to the bottom for our 24hr video guide to this beautiful city.1. Amsterdam Tulip MuseumComprised of six interconnected rooms, this museum provides a fascinating insight into how the arrival of the tulip shaped the modern day Netherlands. When tulips first arrived here, stock exchanges were created to buy and sell bulbs and people sold land, houses and heirlooms to invest in them, so much so that in 1634, the phrase ‘tulip mania’ was born! Although we’re not suggesting you go to such extremes, for a few euros you can pick up a few bulbs of your own at the museum shop.Opening times: Every day between 10am and 6pm, apart from April 27th (King’s Day) and December 25thPrice: Adults €5*, families of three or more €15, students €3How to get there: The museum is in the city centre on the Prinsengracht, opposite the Anne Frank HouseDon’t miss: The fascinating (and very colourful) videos about how tulips are farmed.2. Museum of Bags and PursesThis isn’t just a place for people who like luggage a lot. It’s for those who worship fervently at the arm candy altar. The founder, Hendrikje Ivo, has collected handbags and purses for thirty years. She eventually decided to put her 3,000 bags on display and today the enormous collection is a fascinating reflection of Dutch style throughout the ages, although there are items from the rest of the world too. Ever-expanding, the museum had to relocate in 2007 to a beautiful townhouse on the Herengracht canal but continues to hold a very personal, intimate feel for anyone interested in peeking inside a lifelong passion for fashion.Opening times: Every day between 10am and 5pm, apart from January 1st April 27th (King’s Day) and Christmas Day. On Christmas Eve the museum closes at 4pmPrice: Adults €12.50, children (7-12 years) €3.50 How to get there The museum is on Herengracht, a short walk from the city centre. Alternatively, hop on tram nine or four and get off at Rembrandtplein.Don’t miss: The bag which inspired Hendrikje and Heinz Ivo to set up the museum. It’s a leather handbag which dates back to the 1820s, and which Hendrikje Ivo found during a visit to a small English village. 4. The Houseboat MuseumLet’s face it, the vast majority of us probably wouldn’t enjoy living within the cosy confines of a houseboat, but we’d jump at the chance to have a little snoop around someone else’s. Houseboat owner and museum founder Vincent van Loon was prompted to create this museum after noticing that passersby would constantly ask him about his boat. Although he no longer lives aboard the Hendrika Maria, a nose around the vessel, which has a sizeable living room, kitchen and bathroom and a skipper’s quarters with a sleeping bunk, is a great way to learn about life on the sleepy Dutch canals.Opening times: Days vary from month to month, so always check the website, but generally it’s open every day of the week between 10am and 5pm, excluding Mondays and public holidaysPrice: Adults €4.50, children (5–15 years) €3.50How to get there: The museum is on Prinsengracht, right in the city centreDon’t miss: Enjoying a drink in the boat’s lounge area – you’ll be amazed by how roomy it is, with décor reflecting a typical 1950s Dutch lounge 3. The National Maritime MuseumLocated in an original shipping storehouse dating back to the Golden Age of Dutch naval trade in 1656, and built on its own artificial island on the harbour, today’s Dutch Maritime Museum has plenty of historic integrity both inside and out. There’s a huge number of artefacts, but you can also discover the cramped conditions sailors endured, with a look around a detailed replica of the three-masted ship Amsterdam. For younger visitors there’s a video game-filled interactive section and a dressing room area where they can dress up as sea creatures to their heart’s content. Into your history? Consider checking out the Hague on your next visit to the Netherlands with our guide to ten things to see and do in this often overlooked city.Opening times: Every day between 10am and 5pm, apart from the 27th April (King’s Day), Christmas Day and New Year’s DayPrice: Adults €15, children (5-17 years) €7.50How to get there: The museum is on Kattenburgerplein, a 20-minute walk from Amsterdam Central StationDon’t miss: The technical models of the ships. PlayStation VRHardware revenues from virtual reality headsets, peripherals and 360° cameras are set to increase tenfold over the next five years, according to Juniper Research. The new VR markets study claims that hardware revenues will climb from an estimated US$5 billion this year to more than US$50 billion (€45 billion) by 2021, driven by the widespread adoption of VR by smartphone users, and high unit prices for PC and console headsets.Juniper predicts that the VR market will be “triggered” by the launch of the PlayStation VR headset this October, and Microsoft’s upcoming 4K and VR-capable console, dubbed Project Scorpio, in 2017.While console VR will only make up 27% of VR hardware shipments, it will account for more than 50% of VR hardware revenues, according to the research. The cost of ‘holder’ headsets, designed to offer a VR experience by housing mobile phones, are expected to remain low. However, more advanced platforms like Google Daydream – which is expected to launch this week – are projected to produce “more moderate revenues in the short term”.“On the plus side, low cost headsets will allow consumers to ‘dip’ into VR, but potentially abandon it if the experience is poor. This could be problematic for smartphone VR software developers, who will be relying on in-app purchases for revenue,” according to the research.“Console and PC based VR units can more easily provide high quality experiences, justifying a premium price and upfront software revenue. However, the shape of the early market may already have had an impact on PC-based VR content.”Google is expected to launch its much-rumoured new Pixel phones – which are tipped to be the first on the market to run Google’s Daydream VR platform – at an event in San Francisco later today. Reports also indicate Google could launch a new 4K version of its Chromecast media streaming device and its new Amazon Echo-rivalling Google Home speaker. read more

Afraid you won’t have enough to retire comfortably? You’re not alone, and a debt-fueled lifestyle is often a big part of the problem. As the 2014 EBRI Retirement Confidence Survey notes: Fifty-eight percent of workers and 44 percent of retirees report having a problem with their level of debt. Furthermore, 24 percent of workers and 17 percent of retirees indicate that their current level of debt is higher than it was five years ago. Cost of living and day-to-day expenses head the list of reasons why workers do not save (or save more) for retirement, with 53 percent of workers citing this factor. Retiring rich means you can maintain a comfortable lifestyle without constantly worrying about money. The plan for getting there isn’t complicated: save more; spend less; invest well. That doesn’t mean it’s not difficult. This might sound like a no-brainer, but it’s downright impossible to save more unless you spend less—and for some folks that means a lot less. Sad to say, many baby boomers were never taught to live below their means. Quite the contrary; the credit card culture that blossomed as boomers moved into adulthood encouraged them to spend, spend, and spend some more. If you don’t have the cash, just charge it! This is no way to get rich. Most boomers knew they should save early on, but many kept putting it off until later. Unfortunately, those who let “later” run up against their 60th birthday are screwed. The Not So Mysterious First Step Anyone who doesn’t want to be screwed should begin the first step toward saving today: get out of debt. It might take three months, three years, or a decade (hopefully that means you’re 30). Whatever your time frame, this demands a change in attitude and lifestyle. For people used to using debt for instant gratification, it can be a challenge on par with quitting smoking or hiking Mt. Everest. But remember, some people do quit smoking, and others do, in fact, hike Mt. Everest.Turning Awareness into Action People are generally aware that they need to up their savings if they want to retire comfortably. The EBRI report states that “20 percent say they need to save between 20 and 29 percent of their income and another 22 percent indicate they need to save 30 percent or more.” If you run the projections and realize you don’t have enough money saved, you have three options: Work longer, get out of debt, and accumulate as much as you can. Radically adjust your lifestyle. Say you’re already retired and lived a $100,000-lifestyle during your working years. If you haven’t accumulated a large enough nest egg to generate that kind of income, adjust your lifestyle now before you find yourself in your 80s or 90s, depending on Social Security or family. Resign yourself to working the rest of your life in order to survive. Option 3 is no laughing matter—and for many folks it will be reality. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that workforce participation for people age 75 and over will rise to 10.5% by 2022, up from 7.6% in 2012. For the 65-74 age group, it projects that the rate will jump to 31.9%, up from 26.8% in 2012 and 20.4% in 2002. If you’re still healthy and sharp at age 80 and want to work, great! It’s one thing to be an octogenarian who still oversees the family business a few days a week, but working the Home Depot checkout line at age 80 because you have bills to pay is a whole other matter. Sadly, I suspect the latter is becoming more and more common.Retirement Is a New Phenomenon As a life phase, retirement is still in its infancy. Unless you hail from a particularly well-to-do family, your parents or grandparents were among the first generation able to retire and spend their golden years as they pleased. These folks lived through the Great Depression, or their parents did, and they understood how to stretch a dollar and save. Baby boomers, on the other hand, faced huge social pressures to buy the biggest McMansion they could afford and trade in their two or three cars regularly. They also raised children when attending college had become the norm—something essential to staying in the middle class—but when the cost of college had also shot up. Many boomer parents have taken on student debt for their children that they can ill afford. While the intention behind education debt differs from that of a car loan for a Lexus, both have to be repaid the same way: with money. All this put boomers at a huge disadvantage in the race to retirement. How Much Money Is Enough? The Center for Retirement Research has concluded that the savings rate over one’s working life (beginning at age 20) should be 11% for low-income earners; 15% for middle-income earners; and 16% or above for high-income earners. The reason for the reduced recommendations is that Social Security provides lower-income earners with a larger percentage of their earnings. If, however, one waits until age 50-59 to start saving, it recommends increasing the savings rate to 35% for lower-income, 29% for middle-income, and 30% for higher-income earners. There are clear signs that people are simply not doing this. Most 401(k)s, for example, are woefully underfunded. A 2013 Fidelity survey on 401(k) programs indicated that the average 50-59-year-old has a 401(k) balance of $255,000. That might sound like a lot of money, but the truth is, over the 40 or so nonworking years you may have after retirement, $255,000 won’t stretch all that far. You’re not the “average 50-59-year-old,” though. No one is. So we’ve developed a Retirement Income Calculator which you can download and use to make your own personalized income projections. Knowing where you stand will either put your mind at ease or remind you that now is the time to make a new plan. Foxconn products on display at Waukesha County Technical College.Last updated on July 2nd, 2019 at 09:11 pmFoxconn Technology Group and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee have created an international co-op program that will give UWM engineering students the opportunity to study at Chung Yuan Christian University in Taiwan and work at a Foxconn facility there.Foxconn products on display at Waukesha County Technical College.Foxconn, UWM and Chung Yuan Christian University signed an agreement Thursday for the program. The co-op is designed to introduce engineering students to the Taiwan-based manufacturer’s liquid crystal display fabrication technology and processes. The company’s LCD panels are used in various high-tech consumer electronics products, including smartphones.“We are delighted to host Foxconn’s first international co-op program in Wisconsin and be a model for other universities in the state,” UWM Chancellor Dr. Mark Mone said. “Many of us in higher education have talked for years about the need to collaborate more closely with each other and with our business partners, and Foxconn has encouraged us to accelerate that work to benefit our students and our state.” UWM plans to send five students from its College of Engineering & Applied Science to Taiwan in February 2019. Before the first cohort leaves for Taiwan, they will spend time in the new Foxconn facility in Mount Pleasant. After arriving in Taiwan, they will take classes in culture and language at Chung Yuan Christian University, work on applied research projects in preparation for their co-op with Foxconn and meet with Foxconn employees. They will continue work on their projects at one of the Foxconn facilities in Taiwan through June 2019.“This program will give students in Wisconsin a valuable hands-on international working experience and apply their learning in a real-world, global environment,” said Louis Woo, special assistant to Foxconn founder and CEO Terry Gou. “We are committed to supporting Wisconsin in expanding the existing strong talent pool and nurturing knowledge workers in the state. This will not only make Wisconsin more attractive to other companies but also contribute to its transformation as a global technology hub.”The new program is the second international internship/co-op program at the UWM College of Engineering & Applied Science. Rockwell Automation established an internship program with the college in 2016 in which engineering students work at its facility in Shanghai, China, in partnership with Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The program eventually could be expanded to other colleges and universities in Wisconsin and the Midwest, officials said. She isn’t the first, but she’s making her case in the media capital of the country, which means it’s getting wider attention than usual.Nixon argues that states should prioritize giving legal marijuana dispensary licenses to those who have been convicted of marijuana charges. That number is disproportionately black, even though studies show white and black people use marijuana at about the same percentage rate.“It’s a form of reparations,” Nixon said.Related: You Would Have Thought This Liberal Senator Already Supported Legal Marijuana, but Now She Actually DoesRacial Statistics on Marijuana ArrestsNo matter what people might think about Nixon’s idea, there’s no arguing with the facts about marijuana arrests. One of the main reasons many have championed legal marijuana is to put an end to the racial disparity in arrests. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, for example, has been particularly adamant on this issue, writing “We can no longer accept policies that disproportionately target communities of color.”According to an analysis by the American Civil Liberties Union, marijuana arrests count for half of all drug arrests in the country. Between 2001 and 2010, there were 8.2 million arrests involving marijuana, with 88 percent for simple possession. The study also found a “significant racial bias” in those arrests — blacks are 3.73 times more likely than whites to get arrested for marijuana. A new study found that in New York in 2017, blacks and Hispanics accounted for 86 percent of arrests for marijuana possession in the fifth degree. Just 9 percent were white.A call for change has come from both sides of the political aisle. The liberal think tank The Center for American Progress recently called for decriminalizing marijuana at the federal level. A survey last year found that, for the first time, a majority of Republicans favor legalization.Related: Hemp Is the Multibillion-Dollar Cannabis Opportunity Few Have Heard AboutNixon Is Not AloneNew York does not have legal recreational marijuana, although medical marijuana is legal. She said at the event that marijuana “has effectively been legal for white people for a really long time” and that it’s time to make it official for everyone. In addition to Murphy’s efforts in New Jersey, both Massachusetts and Oakland, Calif., have taken steps to ensure that those affected by the federal War on Drugs get priority when it comes to awarding dispensary licenses. Recreational marijuana is legal in both states.Oakland has especially been at the forefront of this movement. In 2016, the city expanded its medical marijuana licensing program to allow more people of color to open dispensaries.A much-quoted argument for legalization comes from Michelle Alexander, a professor of law at Ohio State University who wrote an opinion piece for the New York Times in 2013. In that piece, she argues that the potential harm of marijuana “pales in comparison with the harm suffered by the millions who have been arrested, jailed and branded criminals simply because they were caught with the drug.”Follow dispensaries.com on Instagram to stay up to date on the latest cannabis news. Learn how to successfully navigate family business dynamics and build businesses that excel. July 3, 2018 Image credit: Google via BI Google Reportedly Allows Outside App Developers to Read People’s Gmails –shares Next Article Gmail 3 min read This story originally appeared on Business Insider Employees working for hundreds of software developers are reading the private messages of Gmail users, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.A year ago, Google promised to stop scanning the inboxes of Gmail users, but the company has not done much to protect Gmail inboxes obtained by outside software developers, according to the newspaper. Gmail users who signed up for “email-based services” like “shopping price comparisons” and “automated travel-itinerary planners” are most at risk of having their private messages read, The Journal reported.Hundreds of app developers electronically “scan” inboxes of the people who signed up for some of these programs, and in some cases, employees do the reading, the paper reported. Google declined to comment. The revelation comes at a bad time for Google and Gmail, the world’s largest email service, with 1.4 billion users. Top tech companies are under pressure in the United States and Europe to do more to protect user privacy and be more transparent about any parties with access to people’s data. The increased scrutiny follows the Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which a data firm was accused of misusing the personal information of more than 80 million Facebook users in an attempt to sway elections. It’s not news that Google and many top email providers enable outside developers to access users’ inboxes. In most cases, the people who signed up for the price-comparison deals or other programs agreed to provide access to their inboxes as part of the opt-in process.Gmail’s opt-in alert spells out generally what a user is agreeing to.Image credit: GoogleIn Google’s case, outside developers must pass a vetting process, and as part of that, Google ensures they have an acceptable privacy agreement, The Journal reported, citing a Google representative. What is unclear is how closely these outside developers adhere to their agreements and whether Google does anything to ensure they do, as well as whether Gmail users are fully aware that individual employees may be reading their emails, as opposed to an automated system, the report says.Mikael Berner, the CEO of Edison Software, a Gmail developer that offers a mobile app for organizing email, told The Journal that its employees had read emails from hundreds of Gmail users as part of an effort to build a new feature. An executive at another company said employees’ reading of emails had become “common practice.”Companies that spoke to The Journal confirmed that the practice was specified in their user agreements and said they had implemented strict rules for employees regarding the handling of email. It’s interesting to note that, judging from The Journal’s story, very little indicates that Google is doing anything different from Microsoft or other top email providers. According to the newspaper, nothing in Microsoft or Yahoo’s policy agreements explicitly allows people to read others’ emails. In China, which now accounts for 50 percent of the daily global trade in bitcoins, its price has skyrocketed. In the U.S., it was the subject Tuesday of the second of two U.S. Senate hearings. Silicon Valley is betting millions on it, and Ben Bernanke, the top central banker in the U.S., said this week that unregulated virtual currencies “may hold long-term promise.”Not long ago, most people were dismissing Bitcoin as merely a passing fad or a hobby for crypto-geeks, if they knew about it at all. Its quixotic nature was taken as a given, as was its ultimate fate: failure to change the status quo, followed by irrelevance. It wasn’t until Bitcoin’s exchange value topped $200 in April 2013 that most mainstream media outlets first took notice. But just because there’s more information about Bitcoin out there now doesn’t mean you should believe everything you read. Read on to get answers to three major misconceptions about Bitcoin, the world’s most popular digital currency.1. Bitcoin is nothing but digital cash for criminals.Bitcoin first came to public attention in 2011 as the coin of the realm for Silk Road, an online black market for illegal drugs, fake IDs and other illicit goods and services. In early October, the Federal Bureau of Investigation shut down Silk Road and apprehended its alleged creator, Ross William Ulbricht, in San Francisco. The price of Bitcoin dropped sharply but quickly recovered, and has since attained heights that would have been unfathomable only weeks ago. And yet, even since that bust, the media has lost no opportunity to tie Bitcoin to Silk Road in report after report.Related: SecondMarket Establishes New Bitcoin Trust for Accredited InvestorsMeanwhile, however, there is a growing ecosystem of legitimate Bitcoin companies — many with investment funding — and businesses accepting Bitcoin as legal tender. Plug and Play Tech Center, an early investor in PayPal, is starting an accelerator program exclusively for Bitcoin-related startups. Between April and June 2013, investors gave a total of $12 million to Bitcoin startups, according to research firm CB Insights. If anything, the pace of funding seems to be accelerating. Lightspeed Venture Partners, working with its Chinese counterpart, just invested $5 million in BTC China, the world’s largest Bitcoin exchange.Even members of the federal government are pulling back from characterizations of Bitcoin as exclusively the preserve of criminals. “Exploitation by malicious actors is a problem faced by all types of financial services, and is not unique to virtual currency systems,” Mythili Raman, the acting assistant attorney general of the Justice Department’s criminal division, said Monday in testimony for the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs hearing on virtual currencies.2. Bitcoin transactions are anonymous and untraceable. From its inception, Bitcoin has been associated with privacy, even anonymity, because you don’t have to provide a Social Security number, bank account or other identifying details in order to transact in Bitcoin. But that doesn’t mean your use of Bitcoin is a big secret. In fact, every Bitcoin transaction ever is recorded publicly on something called the blockchain. This public log prevents fraudulent activity such as people spending the same bitcoins twice. And while it’s difficult to trace these public transactions back to the real identities of users, it is not impossible. Researchers from the University of California, San Diego and George Mason University recently created a map of the Bitcoin economy that could be used by law enforcement to track the flow of bitcoins from criminal sources to legitimate companies such as Bitstamp and other exchange services. In the U.S., exchanges are required to obtain identifying personal information from their users, so a subpoena could reveal a criminal’s real identity.Related: Bitcoin Startups Get Their Own Silicon Valley AcceleratorThe fact that exchanges require users to verify their identities also makes it difficult to cash out one’s ill-gotten gains without getting caught. As Bitcoin developer Jeff Garzik has said, “Attempting major illicit transactions with Bitcoin, given existing statistical analysis techniques deployed in the field by law enforcement, is pretty damned dumb.”3. Mt. Gox is the go-to place for the value of Bitcoin. For a long time, Tokyo-based exchange Mt. Gox was the top Bitcoin trading platform in the world. This fact has led many casual observers and reporters to cite its price as the price of Bitcoin during various swings in the market. There is just one problem with that practice: for months now, the Mt. Gox price has been artificially inflated. Why the inflation? It has to do with recent difficulties in withdrawing U.S. funds from Mt. Gox. Because users have found themselves unable to pull their dollars out of the exchange, they are forced to buy bitcoins with those dollars and then transfer the coins elsewhere. Those trades have driven the price on Mt. Gox beyond the price found on Bitstamp, Coinbase and most other exchanges. One way to verify this discrepancy is to visit Bitcoin Average and click the button that says “ignore MTGox for USD/EUR/GBP.”BTC China, which now processes more than one-third of the world’s daily Bitcoin transactions, and is open only to Chinese customers, is also overheated. It is somewhat misleading to quote the global price of Bitcoin by simply converting the price in yuan on BTC China to U.S. dollars, because that value is elevated beyond what is achievable on exchanges that transact in dollars.Related: Bitcoin Hits New All-Time High Ahead of Hearings 5 min read Register Now » Next Article 3 Big Misconceptions About Bitcoin Finance Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals read more

Technology Add to Queue Guest Writer Image credit: Shutterstock Laura Entis There are already plenty of reasons to keep your caffeine addiction alive and kicking: habitual coffee drinkers are less likely to die of heart failure as those who don’t indulge, and research has suggested that caffeine may help prevent cancer, diabetes, stroke, and Parkinson’s disease. But the stimulant’s most important perk is intuitive: it boosts both short-term memory and focus, energizing us when we should, by all rights, be asleep at our desks. And now there’s another reason to grab your morning cup of coffee: A recent study published in the journal Nature Neuroscience suggests that caffeine may also boost our long-term memory.Related: Starbucks Now Offers Fizz as a Customized Add-On In Some ShopsResearchers conducted a double-blind trial, in which they gave participants 100 to 300 milligrams of caffeine five minutes after they looked at a series of images. The next day, the group who received 200 (the equivalent of one strong cup of coffee) or 300 milligrams of caffeine were able to more accurately identify when a picture was similar, but a little different, from the one they had seen before. While the results are a little murky (the group who received the placebo performed better than those who only received 100 milligrams of caffeine), the study’s authors still suspect they’re onto something.”We’ve always known that caffeine has cognitive-enhancing effects, but its particular effects on strengthening memories and making them resistant to forgetting has never been examined in detail in humans,” Yassa, senior author of the paper, told Johns Hopkins’ news network. “We report for the first time a specific effect of caffeine on reducing forgetting over 24 hours.”Related: 3 Easy Tricks to Improve Your Memory A Possible Perk for Coffee Addicts: Better Long-Term Memory January 15, 2014 Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Contributor The Lock screen may seem like an obstacle, but it offers helpful information and customization options. Learn how to successfully navigate family business dynamics and build businesses that excel. Lance Whitney Register Now » Image credit: via PC Mag Next Article How to Use and Tweak Your Windows 10 Lock Screen This story originally appeared on PCMag –shares Free Webinar | July 31: Secrets to Running a Successful Family Business Windows 10 The first item that greets you when you fire up Windows 10 is the Lock screen. Clicking or tapping on it brings you to the sign-in screen where you log in to Windows. Yes, the Lock screen seems unnecessary, but it carries with it some tidbits that can be useful before you even launch Windows. From the Lock screen, you can view information from certain apps. You can chat with Cortana if you’ve installed the new Windows 10 Anniversary update. And you can customize the screen with your favorite background image or slideshow. Here’s how. To tweak the Lock screen within Windows 10, click the Start button and click on the Settings icon. (For those of you who’ve installed the Windows 10 Anniversary update, the Settings icon looks like a small gear.) From the Settings screen, click on the category for Personalization and then click on the setting for Lock screen. The first thing we’ll do is pick a background image for the Lock screen. Click on the drop-down menu under Background. Let’s choose Windows Spotlight. The spotlight option displays a different image periodically, only you get to vote on which images you like. Windows will ask if you like or dislike a certain image to try to learn your preferences and then display images it thinks will strike your fancy. The second option for Picture lets you choose a picture from one of the thumbnail images displayed. Or you can click on the Browse button to choose a different image from your own Pictures or from a different folder. And the third option for Slideshow lets you choose multiple images that segue from one to another to play a slideshow on your Lock screen. The next option lets you display tips and other information about Windows and Cortana on your Lock screen. This option is available only if you opted to set your background image as a picture.Next you can choose an app to see specific details from it on the Lock screen. Click on the icon under the phrase “Choose an app to show detailed status.” You can opt to see details from Weather, Messaging, Calendar, Mail and other apps. For example, choosing Calendar might show you an appointment scheduled today, while choosing Weather may display the current temperature. You can then also choose several apps to display a quick status, which simply means fewer details. Click on each icon under the phrase “Choose apps to show quick status.” Again, you can select such apps as Weather, Messaging and Calendar as well as Alarms & Clock, Mail and Windows Store. The next time the Lock screen pops up, you should see information from the apps you chose. If you’re happy with your Lock screen image, you can keep the same one for your sign-in screen. Just turn on the next option to “Show lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen.”Finally, the coolest option of all may be the ability to chat with Cortana at the Lock screen without having to log in. Just click on the link that says: “Cortana lock screen settings.” The Cortana settings pane appears, displaying an option that says: “Use Cortana even when my device is locked.” Make sure that setting is enabled, and you’ll be able to say “Hey Cortana,” and post a question or command to Microsoft’s voice assistant right from the Lock screen. This option is available only if you’ve installed the Windows 10 Anniversary update.Scroll down a bit further and you can also turn on an option to “Let Cortana manage my calendar, email, messages and Power BI data when my device is locked.”So with some simple tweaks and setting changes, there’s lots you can do in Windows 10 from the Lock screen without even having to sign in. 4 min read October 3, 2016 Add to Queue read more
Mahathir raises ‘remote takeover’ theory in MH370 mystery Citation: MH370 search under review, may be scrapped: Mahathir (2018, May 23) retrieved 18 July 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2018-05-mh370-scrapped-mahathir.html Explore further Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared in March 2014 with 239 people onboard while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing The Malaysia Airlines jet disappeared in March 2014 with 239 mostly Chinese people onboard while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. No sign of the plane was found in a 120,000 square kilometre (46,000 square mile) sea search zone and the Australian-led hunt, the largest in aviation history, was suspended in January last year. The former Malaysian government struck a “no find, no fee” deal with exploration firm Ocean Infinity to resume the search in an area north of the original zone, that scientists now believe is the likeliest crash site. The search restarted in January and Ocean Infinity stands to make as much as $70 million if the jet is found. However Malaysia’s new government, which came to power after a surprise election victory on May 9, said they may not continue the deal.”We are reviewing the contract,” Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad told reporters after chairing his first cabinet meeting since the poll.”We may terminate it if it’s not useful.”The new administration has said the country’s finances are in bad shape partly due to allegations that billions of dollars were looted from a state fund by ousted leader Najib Razak and his cronies. Najib is now being probed over his role in the scandal. He denies any wrongdoing.Mahathir announced Wednesday that members of the cabinet would have their base salaries cut by 10 percent to demonstrate the government was concerned about the nation’s finances.Mahathir’s coalition, the Pact of Hope, unseated the once-powerful Barisan Nasional, which had ruled the country uninterrupted for 61 years. © 2018 AFP The hunt for missing flight MH370 is being reviewed and may be scrapped, Malaysia’s prime minister said Wednesday, as the country’s new government seeks cuts in public spending. Published on March 29, 2019 SHARE SHARE SHARE EMAIL COMMENT Delhi The Supreme Court on Friday granted two more months to the Special Investigation Team to complete its probe into 186 cases of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.A bench comprising Justices SA Bobde and S Abdul Nazeer extended the time after the SIT informed it that more than 50 per cent of the work has been done and it wanted two more months to complete the investigation. The apex court also issued notice to parties on a plea by petitioner S Gurlad Singh Kahlon, a member of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, seeking inquiry into role of 62 policemen named in the riots. The apex court had on January 11 last year constituted the SIT headed by former Delhi High Court judge Justice S N Dhingra and comprising retired IPS officer Rajdeep Singh and serving IPS officer Abhishek Dular to supervise further probe into the 186 riots cases, in which closure reports had been filed earlier. However, the SIT presently has only two members as Singh had declined to be a part of the team on “personal grounds”.The top court had appointed the three-member SIT after the Ministry of Home Affairs and counsel for petitioner S G S Kahlon arrived at a consensus with regard to the persons who could be appointed in the fresh SIT.Large-scale riots had broken out in the national capital following the assassination of the then prime minister Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh security guards on October 31, 1984. The violence had claimed 2,733 lives in Delhi alone. The court had said the previous SIT did not carry out further probe into the 186 cases and had directed setting up of a fresh SIT comprising a former high court judge and two police officers.Justice Dhingra, who had retired from the Delhi High Court, had dealt with several high-profile cases including the 2001 Parliament Attack case as a trial judge. As the judge of the trial court, he had dealt with many of the 1984 riot cases, and his verdicts had resulted in conviction in 16 cases. On August 16, 2017, the apex court had appointed a supervisory panel to examine the earlier SIT’s decision to close 241 cases. The Centre had said that out of 250 riots cases which were probed by that SIT, closure reports were filed in 241. It had said some cases were still being investigated by the SIT, and two by the CBI.The earlier SIT was headed by Pramod Asthana, an IPS officer of 1986 batch, and comprised retired district and sessions judge Rakesh Kapoor and additional deputy commissioner of the Delhi Police Kumar Gyanesh.Kahlon had told the court that a total of 293 riot-related cases were taken up for scrutiny by the earlier SIT which later decided to close 199 of them. Kahlon had sought the top court’s direction for setting up another SIT to ensure speedy justice to the riot victims. courts and legal unrest, conflicts and war COMMENTS read more
Former Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda was on Monday appointed the new working President of the BJP. Announcing it here, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the decision has been taken following a formal request from Amit Shah to relinquish his post as BJP chief following his appointment as Home Minister.Shah relinquishes“As BJP President, Amit Shah has served the party for the last five years in an exemplary fashion. The party won several elections in the States. In the Lok Sabha elections, too, it was Amit Shah’s organisation that complimented the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and popularity. After the PM gave him a new responsibility as Home Minister, Amit Shah had himself requested that he would be busy with his ministerial duties and someone else should be appointed BJP President,” said Rajnath Singh, following a meeting of the BJP parliamentary board chaired by the PM.The Defence Minister said while most members of the parliamentary board were of the opinion that Shah should continue, he insisted that someone else be appointed.“We were of the opinion that he should continue, at least till the organisational elections are. But he insisted that someone else should take charge. In the discussion that we had, everyone unanimously agreed that JP Nadda should be appointed working President.”Not in CabinetIt was reported exclusively in BusinessLine on May 30 that Nadda was tipped to be Shah’s successor as party President. Nadda, an affable, low-profile leader from Himachal Pradesh has worked closely with Shah in several Assembly and the just-concluded Lok Sabha concluded elections. The fact that he was not included in the Union Cabinet for a second term was a clear pointer to him succeeding Shah in the party.Although the BJP Constitution does not specifically prevent anyone holding an official post from simultaneously remain the party President, Shah has himself requested to be relieved of his duties as BJP chief.Nadda’s taskShah formally took over in July 2014 and the tenure allows him two consecutive terms of three years each. As such, he has more than one year left in his second tenure. Nadda’s advantage is that he is trusted by Shah and is sensible enough to follow the line of command emanating from Modi and Shah. So, the BJP’s future challenges — whether it is upcoming Assembly elections in Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand or dismembering of the Trinamool Congress and Mamata Banerjee’s rule in West Bengal — can be planned and executed in perfect harmony with Nadda as the head of the party organisation.
