Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest One might think that 4-H winds down during the winter months, when in fact the homework is in place for all that will follow when spring arrives. Many dairy judging opportunities take place around the state and all can help to lead up to Spring Dairy Expo when the state 4-H and FFA contest will take place on April 1 (no kidding). Spring Dairy Expo (springdairyexpo.com), March 30 – April 1, serves as the transition from one season to another and also allows dairy enthusiasts to gather for shows, sales, showmanship contests, and social gatherings. Here at the University, there also are many recognition programs that take place for students and alumni. On March 4, the CFAES Alumni Awards Luncheon will take place at the Fawcett Center and you will note some familiar dairy names within that group. On April 8, the Animal Sciences Department Recognition Banquet will be held at the 4-H Center on the OSU Columbus campus. Each year, the dairy judging program recognizes the anniversary teams of 50, 25, and 10 years, along with current members. There are a few members on the 50 year team for which I could use updates and addresses. If you know of Tom Criblez or Harold Meeusen, please help me to make sure they have a formal invitation. To finish out April, Dairy Palooza programs will be held at the Wayne County Fairgrounds on April 22 and then at the Auglaize County Fairgrounds on April 29. The website is updated and filled with information at ohiodairypalooza.com. Please encourage youth and adults alike with dairy interests to attend these workshops AND Quality Assurance training will be provided. We also have adult programs based around updates that will assist advisors in planning effective meetings. read more

A microwave oven uses less energy than a conventional oven. Even though this statement is broadly true, a microwave oven isn’t always the most efficient way to cook.So what appliance should you use to heat up or cook your dinner: A gas stovetop? An electric-resistance stovetop? An induction stovetop? A gas oven? An electric oven? A countertop toaster oven? A crockpot? Or a microwave oven?If all you care about is energy efficiency, it’s possible to come up with an answer to this question — but the answer will depend on the quantity and the type of food you are cooking. If you care about the taste of your food, on the other hand, energy efficiency probably doesn’t matter. For example, if you are cooking a traditional paella, the answer is, “An open fire fueled by prunings from a vineyard” — and energy efficiency be damned.A microwave oven uses quite a bit of power — between 950 and 1,720 watts — but it usually isn’t operated for long. According to a 2001 Home Energy article, “the typical residential microwave oven consumes about 110 kWh of electricity per year.” If you are paying 15¢/kWh for electricity, your microwave oven is costing you only about $16 a year to operate.According to The Consumer Guide to Home Energy Savings, a publication of the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, cooking a casserole costs 16¢ if you use a conventional electric oven; 8¢ if you use a toaster oven; 7¢ if you use a gas oven; 6¢ if you use an electric crockpot; and 3¢ if you use a microwave oven. (These calculations are based on the assumption that natural gas costs 60¢/therm, and electricity costs 8¢/kWh. To bring these estimates roughly in line with current energy prices, the estimated costs should be increased by 40% to 100%.)However, there are many factors… read more

View comments Since then, however, the Lakers have won nine games and lost 17, a slump which has seen them fall out of the playoff rankings into 11th spot in the West, three places adrift of the eighth postseason slot.Much of that slide can be attributed to James’ prolonged absence due to a groin injury, with the 34-year-old missing all of January before returning for a 123-120 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on February 1.However, the Lakers have continued to struggle even with James back in the line-up.READ: Anthony Davis-less Pelicans stunt Lakers playoff push A chastening sequence of results has included the heaviest defeat of James’ career, a 136-94 pounding by the Indiana Pacers, as well as losses to lower-ranked opponents who have little to play for.ADVERTISEMENT SEA Games hosting troubles anger Duterte Team USA among No. 1 seeds for FIBA World Cup in China PH underwater hockey team aims to make waves in SEA Games PLAY LIST 02:42PH underwater hockey team aims to make waves in SEA Games01:44Philippines marks anniversary of massacre with calls for justice01:19Fire erupts in Barangay Tatalon in Quezon City01:07Trump talks impeachment while meeting NCAA athletes02:49World-class track facilities installed at NCC for SEA Games02:11Trump awards medals to Jon Voight, Alison Krauss The most recent of those came on Monday against the Memphis Grizzlies, who are one place off the bottom of the West with a 24-38 record.James later appeared to question his team-mates’ focus after Monday’s 110-105 reverse in Memphis, suggesting that any player unable to cope with the pressure of chasing a playoff berth should find another club.Locker room turmoil?“At this point if you are still allowing distractions to affect how the way you play, then this is the wrong franchise to be a part of and you should just come and be like, ‘Listen, I don’t think this is for me’,” James told reporters. Those kind of comments are unlikely to endear him to a locker room which has reportedly been in turmoil since the team’s pursuit of New Orleans Pelicans star Anthony Davis ended in failure in early February. The Lakers were reported to have offered several prominent members of their roster in exchange for Davis, including Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, Ivica Zubac and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.READ: LeBron James not ‘chasing’ Lakers rebuildJames meanwhile had earlier spoken favorably of a possible link-up with Davis, saying playing alongside the Pelicans ace would be “amazing”.The perception that the Lakers’ pursuit of Davis was going ahead with James’ blessing was pounced upon by rival fans.Ingram was subjected to taunts of “LeBron’s gonna trade you” during the loss to Indiana on February 5.
