New Delhi, Mar 15 (PTI) The ruling BJP is unlikely to renominate at least 10 of its members to key financial committees, including the PAC.While refusing to give details, Parliamentary Affairs Minister and senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu said members are nominated to Parliamentary Committees based on the time they are able to give to such panels. He said it is a routine exercise to nominate members to parliamentary panels. The one-year term of the three financial committees — Public Accounts Committee, Estimates Committee and Committee on Public Undertakings is coming to an end on April 30 before which either new members will be elected or nominated to them.Parliamentary sources said actor-turned politician Vinod Khanna and former cricketer Kirti Azad (Jha) are unlikely to be nominated by the BJP to the Estimates Committee headed by party veteran Murli Manohar Joshi.Similarly, Dushyant Singh may not be renominated to the Public Accounts Committee headed by Congress leader K V Thomas, the sources said.Nand Kumar Singh Chauhan and Varun Gandhi may not find a place in the Committee of Public Undertakings headed by BJP senior Shanta Kumar.”Every member (from Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha), be it nominated or Independent, is a member of at least two Parliamentary committees,” explained a government functionary to underline the fact that a member dropped from one committee will find a place in other panel. While the Estimates Committee has 30 Lok Sabha members, the PAC has 22 members — 15 from Lok Sabha and seven from Rajya Sabha. The Committee on Public Undertakings too has 22 members — 15 from the lower house and seven from the upper house. PTI NAB ZMNadvertisement read more
By Philem Dipak SinghNew Delhi, Dec 11 (PTI) A 15-year-old female footballer from Delhi, who had gone to take part in the unrecognised Pacific School Games in Australia, died after being drowned at the Glenelg Beach in Adelaide today, a top official of School Games Federation of India (SGFI) said. The school girl, Nitisha Negi, was one of the five Indian footballers who were swept away by a huge wave on Sunday when they ventured into the seawaters after the completion of the Games.SGFI, which is headed by double Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar, had fielded U-18 teams in six disciplines including hockey, football and softball for the invitational event, jointly organised by the Australian government and School Sports Australia. These Games were not recognised by the International School Sports Federation, the parent international body. The Indian contingent had around 120 members.Four of the five girls were rescued by local surf lifesavers yesterday while the fifth one was found dead after resumption of search operation this morning. Her dead body was recovered near a rocky breakwater, the same section of beach where the two migrant boys drowned last year. The Sports Ministry has ordered an inquiry into the unfortunate incident.SGFI Secretary General Rajesh Mishra confirmed to PTI that the dead body of the girl was recovered early this morning by the local Australian officials.”We have got the message from Australia that the dead body of the girl was recovered this morning after a massive search operation. It is a very unfortunate incident and I send my heartfelt condolences to her family,” Mishra said from Agra on phone.advertisement”Before returning home, the sports manager had taken some players to sea beach last evening. Out of them five girls from the football team had gone down into the seawater and were taking selfies. They must not have seen a huge wave coming from behind, they fell down and all the five were swept away,” he said.Four of them were rescued by the lifesavers stationed at the beach, with the help of around 40 Indian players and coaches.”Helicopters came and the four girls were taken to nearby hospitals but the fifth one went missing. The local Australian officials continued the search and I can confirm that the dead body of the fifth girl was found this morning,” Mishra said.He said all the five school girls, including the one who died, were from Delhi.”Out of the four who were taken to the hospital, three have been discharged while the fourth girl is likely to be discharged shortly. She (the fourth girl) was kept at the ICU but is now out of danger and will be discharged tomorrow,” Mishra said.Asked why the school girls were allowed to go to the dangerous area of the beach, Mishra said, “We have sent an official of the SGFI to probe the the matter and the federation will take action on the basis of that report.”It is a matter involving the death of a person and so the local Australian police will deal with the issue. Of course the Indian High Commission is also involved. Sports Ministry has also ordered an inquiry and we have been told to submit some documents and we have done that.”The Sports Ministry tweeted before the news of the girls death: “The Very disturbing news from Glenelg beach in Australia. Hble MOS sports,YAS is in touch with @MEAIndia and HEAM @SushmaSwaraj ji.””Indian High Commission is providing all support. Our thoughts & prayers w/ the players. Thorough investigation is ordered,” the ministry said on its official Twitter handle.Mishra admitted that these Games were not recognised by the International School Sport Federation (ISF) but the Indians had participated through the government on the invitation of the School Sports Australia.”This is not recognised by the ISF but we have done nothing wrong while participating in the event. In fact, the invitation letter from the School Sports Australia first came to the Sports Ministry which forwarded it to us,” he said.”The SGFI then asked our state units whether they are interested in sending their players. Some state units like Delhi, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh said yes.”He said the governments of Delhi, Chhattisgarh and MP sanctioned funds for these school children to take part in the Games. “The state units of the SGFI have state government officials as members. So the governments of Delhi, Chhattisgarh and MP wanted to send their school children as part of sports promotion.”advertisementAsked if the SGFI got sanction from the Sports Ministry, he said, “Under Sports Ministry rules you can take part in tournaments outside the country at your own cost. So the Sports Ministry did not give any funds but the invitation letter from the Australian federation was forwarded to us from the Sports Ministry.”So, there was no need to get sanction from the sports ministry.” PTI PDS AH PDS read more

Nova Scotians should be mindful of blue-green algae blooms that may appear in rivers and lakes across the province during the summer months. Also known as pond scum, blue-green algae can be identified because of its blueish green, grassy or soupy appearance on the water’s surface, and it may also produce a distinct odour. Although many forms of blue-green algae are harmless, some produce toxins which may pose a health risk for humans and animals. People should not swim in, drink from, or eat fish from water sources where the algae is present. Water contaminated with algae should not be used to prepare or cook food, and boiling the water will not eliminate the toxins. “It’s important to remember that algae blooms can occur naturally in the right conditions, and can appear in any lake or river across the province,” said Dr. Richard Gould, medical officer of health. “The risk to health is fairly low, but if you develop symptoms that persist for a few days, you should consult a physician.” If water containing algae is swallowed, symptoms may include stomach ache, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea. Direct contact to skin from swimming may cause skin, nose, throat or eye irritations. Nova Scotians who suspect an algae bloom can call and report it to a local Department of Environment office. (Jody Wilson-Raybould. Facebook)The move wasn’t explained at the time. On Thursday, Montreal Liberal MP Anthony Housefather speculated in a radio interview that Trudeau might have wanted a justice minister who spoke better French because “there’s a lot of legal issues coming up in Quebec.”Housefather chairs the House of Commons justice committee, which voted on Wednesday to take up an examination of Wilson-Raybould’s departure, though a much more limited one than opposition members want.Wilson-Raybould made history when she became the first Indigenous justice minister back in 2015.She became a powerful symbol of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s assertion that there was no relationship more important to him than that with Indigenous Peoples. Some Indigenous leaders across the country have excoriated Trudeau for what they perceive as his shoddy treatment of Wilson-Raybould, which they assert proves his reconciliation agenda is a farce. But the Indigenous senators’ statement is much more circumspect, praising Wilson-Raybould for her “courage and leadership” while not taking sides in the dispute between the former minister and Trudeau.Trudeau has said no one in his office improperly pressured Wilson-Raybould to instruct the director of public prosecutions to negotiate a form of plea bargain with SNC-Lavalin, rather than pursue a prosecution that could wind up bankrupting the company. If Wilson-Raybould had felt pressured, he has said, she should have raised her concerns with him.Wilson-Raybould has so far given no reason for her resignation. She has cited solicitor-client privilege in refusing to comment on the allegation, levelled by anonymous sources in a Globe and Mail story last week. She has now hired a former Supreme Court justice, Thomas Cromwell, to advise her on what she may legally say.Read more: Jody Wilson-Raybould The senators used their statement to commend Wilson-Raybould for her accomplishments as justice minister, praising her “personal strength of character, integrity and dedication to modernize the justice system and work towards reconciliation.”Trudeau and his office have taken pains since Wilson-Raybould’s departure to try to soothe the nerves of rattled Liberal backbenchers. Trudeau spoke to his MPs Tuesday evening by teleconference.According to MPs on the call, the prime minister assured them that there had been no wrongdoing. He acknowledged that there had been internal discussions about whether to intervene to halt the prosecution of SNC-Lavalin but said that was normal given the importance of the company and thousands of jobs at stake.Trudeau took no questions from MPs but, since then, staff in charge of the various regional desks in the PMO have been calling backbenchers to answer questions.Trudeau’s principal secretary, Gerald Butts, has also been calling MPs.Privately, some Liberal backbenchers wonder how much longer Wilson-Raybould can continue to be a member of the Liberal caucus, given that she has apparently set herself at odds with the prime minister in what has become a huge political firestorm for the government in an election year. For his part, Rusnak said he has “no idea” whether she can remain in caucus.“I don’t know what’s going on in Jody’s head. I don’t know exactly why she resigned.”firstname.lastname@example.org@aptnnews The Canadian PressIndigenous senators say Jody Wilson-Raybould’s controversial exit from the cabinet doesn’t signal the end of reconciliation efforts between the federal government and Indigenous Peoples. But they say her departure is a sign of how much work there is still to do.“Even though some will see this as a threat to the promise and process of reconciliation, it is not,” eight Indigenous senators said in a written statement issued Thursday.“It is a measure of the distance they have yet to go and the challenges we have yet to overcome. As long as Ms. Wilson-Raybould and other men and women like her gain and remain on the national scene and show the integrity we need to persevere on this journey, change will occur.”(Senator Murray Sinclair. APTN)The statement was drafted by independent Sen. Murray Sinclair, a former judge who led the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that examined the history of residential schools in Canada. It was signed by him and seven other Indigenous senators. An Indigenous Liberal MP offered a similar sentiment.“I think Jody resigning from cabinet is a huge loss … for Indigenous communities right across the country,” said Don Rusnak, who represents the Ontario riding of Thunder Bay-Rainy River and was the inaugural chair of the Liberals’ Indigenous caucus. That said, Rusnak argued that no one person speaks for Indigenous communities, each of which is unique.“Jody is one of those voices and one of those trusted voices but we have others and non-Indigenous people in our cabinet and in our caucus that speak with communities, have relationships with communities,” he said in an interview.“I think, I know that the prime minister is sincere in what he is trying to do and the work will continue.”Wilson-Raybould resigned from cabinet Tuesday amid a furor over an allegation that the Prime Minister’s Office improperly pressured her last fall to help Montreal engineering giant SNC-Lavalin avoid criminal prosecution on corruption and bribery charges related to government contracts in Libya.Wilson-Raybould was justice minister and attorney general at the time but was demoted to veterans affairs in a January cabinet shuffle. read more

Ohio State redshirt sophomore guard Sierra Calhoun drives the lane against a Wisconsin defender in the second half at the Schottenstein Center on Jan. 19. OSU won 70-61. Credit: Jacob Myers | Assistant Sports EditorOhio State (22-5, 12-1) stretched out its winning streak to eight straight, edging out the Iowa Hawkeyes (15-10, 6-6) 88-81 Sunday. The Buckeyes were led by junior guard Kelsey Mitchell and senior forward Shayla Cooper with 20 points apiece. Cooper also lead the team in rebounds (8) and assists (5).The first half was a fast paced shootout from both sides of the court. The Buckeyes came out in a full-court press in the first quarter, but the Hawkeyes were able to handle the ball. OSU had a tough time stopping Iowa’s shot attempts, as the Hawkeyes shot 48.6 percent at the end of the first half. OSU held their own shooting 48.5 percent and scoring extra points from the charity line, hitting five of their seven free throws. With leading scorer Mitchell off to a slow start with only four points at the half, other Buckeyes stepped up. Junior guard Sierra Calhoun hit four 3-pointers before the end of the half, scoring 14 points. She finished her game with 19 points. The half ended with the Buckeyes having the slight edge, 41-38. Calhoun gave credit to her teammates for her shooting well against Iowa. “Teammates did great job of finding me, coaches came up with a great gameplan and against their defense we executed well,” she said. Cooper jokingly added her words of encouragement to Calhoun prior to the opening tip.“Before the game started I told her, ‘When I pass you the ball you better shoot it, because I’m not passing it for no reason,’” Cooper said.Going into the third and fourth quarter, the game stayed at its’ same fast but even pace. The momentum officially swung in the favor of OSU with 3:45 minutes left of play. Iowa and OSU were tied at 72, when freshman guard Kierra Lewis hit a contested layup to put the Buckeyes up two. On the other side Iowa missed a layup, and Lewis capitalized on the fast break opportunity hitting another layup. Mitchell then scored three straight times, followed by a Cooper layup allowing the Buckeyes to go on 12-0 run. This run sealed the deal for the Buckeyes, allowing them to walk away with their 13th straight home win. OSU coach Kevin McGuff mentioned that the close game scenario could be looked at in a positive light. “For us to have to executive offensively in a tight situation is good for us,” he said. “For us to have to get stops and rebounds down the stretch is also something we need to be doing this time of year.”OSU also relied on their ability to shoot well at the line and good passing to pull through with the win. The Buckeyes scored 20 points from the free throw line and dished out 18 assists on the night. However, the Buckeyes missed their leading rebounder junior forward Stephanie Mavunga, as the second best rebounding team in the nation was out rebounded by Iowa 39-36. Mavunga could be out for the next few weeks, and McGuff mentioned that rebounding is something the team will have to collectively work on for the time being. “Steph is one of the best rebounders in college basketball, so we will have to make that up by committee, more than just one person,” he said. Iowa also had four players score double digits, and were led by senior guard Ally Disterhoft with 22 points, followed by sophomore forward Gustafson with 17.The Buckeyes will play next at Nebraska at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday. read more

“He chose not to have a quiet retirement but participated with others in a serious criminal enterprise to make substantial gain.”The consequences of his crime were to cause very significant loss, amounting to many millions of pounds worth of property to the victims.”Collins’s friends and family said “we love you Kenny” and “stay strong, you’ll get through this”, as he was taken down to the cells. The age of the criminal gang is already threatening to pose problems for the authorities as they attempt to claw back the stolen money. Terry Perkins, another of the ringleaders, died in prison last year at the age of 69, while his accomplice Brian Reader, 80, may escape a further jail sentence after being diagnosed with dementia. The judge said his decision to send Collins back to jail was not to pass a second sentence but to enforce the order.”It is important that perpetrators of crime do not profit from their conduct. The principle is as important whatever the age of the defendant who committed the crime,” he said.”I am satisfied Mr Collins has wilfully refused and culpably neglected to co-operate in the realisation of his identifiable assets and in what the learned judge has found as the hidden assets.” John Collins With a combined age of 440, the gang of seasoned criminals – who became known as the Diamond Wheezers – carried out the audacious raid over Easter weekend 2015. Using a drill to bore a hole into the concrete vault wall, the thieves ransacked 73 safe deposit boxes before making their escape. They were arrested six weeks later and it subsequently emerged that Scotland Yard had placed the gang under surveillance shortly after the raid.A fourth member of the gang, Daniel Jones, 64, has already been sentenced to seven years after failing to pay back any of the cash.Alarm specialist Michael Seed, 58, who was known as “Basil”, was jailed for 10 years in March after becoming the 10th person convicted over the raid. He said: “I recognise that Mr Collins is in his 70s. It was entirely his decision to commit that crime at a time in his life when most people hope to enjoy a quiet retirement. The getaway driver in the Hatton Garden heist has been sent back to jail for failing to return the stolen money, as a judge claimed he “chose not to have a quiet retirement”.John “Kenny” Collins, 78, was released at the end of last year after serving half of his seven-year sentence for the £13.7 million burglary. The 78-year-old and three of his accomplices were handed one of the biggest confiscation orders in Scotland Yard’s history – a collective £5.75m – in January last year.Prosecutors said the cash was available in hidden assets from unrecovered jewellery, gold, gems and cash, as well as individual additional amounts from realisable assets such as properties in the UK and abroad.Collins’s bill came to a total of £7.6 million, including the proceeds of his share of a house in Islington, north London, and a property in Spain. An earlier hearing was told Collins had handed over £732,000 and recently received an offer of £742,500 for his London home, while his Spanish flat is now worth just 99,000 euros rather than the £350,000 estimated last year.On Thursday, District Judge Richard Blake sent him back to jail for 2,309 days, more than six years, and told him he would serve half. … says the man also never made an effort to visit the Police CID HeadquartersThe man who claimed to be an eyewitness to the killing of three alleged bandits on the Kingston Seawall road, was never on the roof of the Guyana Softball Association on Carifesta Avenue, as he claimed.Acting Police Commissioner, David Ramnarine,This is according to Acting Top Cop, David Ramnarine on Thursday during a press conference.Ramnarine asserted that investigators are presently in possession of three key statements which have indicated that the “eyewitness”- Devon Lyte- a labourer, was working on the ground floor of the said building at the time of the shooting on March 15, 2018.“Our investigators are in possession of three statements. Well, in fact, several statements, but three of which are very very instructive to the extent that Mr Devon Lyte was never ever, I repeat, never ever on the roof of the building he claimed he was on at the Press Conference on Monday. One of the statements is from the Contractor, one from the Sub-Contractor and one from the Security Supervisor,” he explained.(L) Attorney Nigel Hughes and the self proclaimed eyewitness Devon LyteFurther, the Top Cop told the media that based on information delivered to him, Lyte’s Attorney, Nigel Hughes visited the location where his client claimed to be on the day of the shooting and was provided with this startling information.“In fact, I have to let you know and let the world know that on yesterday’s date, the learned Attorney went to that location where his client, seemingly, was on the roof on the day in question, March the 15th, and he enquired as to where specifically his client was and on being told that his client is a labourer, not a skilled worker, worked on the ground floor that’s on the ground with what you call a ransom, a mixer, he left,” Ramnarine said.He also posited that Lyte has not reported to work since Sunday last- one day before he appeared on television claiming to have seen what transpired between police and the alleged criminals on March 15.Hours after the shooting which led to the death of three men, Dextroy Cordis also known as Dutty, of Grove, East Bank Demerara, Kwame Assanah, of Buxton, East Coast Demerara and Errol Adams also known as Dynamite, police in a statement related that the men were followed by an unmarked police vehicle after they were seen trailing a customer who had left the Scotia Bank on Robb Street, Georgetown. The black vehicle the suspects were using and which was reportedly driven by Kwame AssanahThe police claimed that in the vicinity of the seawalls, the men in the black Toyota car opened fire on them and in retaliation; they returned fire fatally wounding them. Another suspect was said to have escaped on a motorcycle. However, on Monday last, Lyte during a press conference held at his attorney’s office read from a prepared statement, claiming that on the day Cordis, Assanah, and Adams were fatally shot, he was working on the roof of the Guyana Softball Association on Carifesta Avenue and would have witnessed the incident. His account of the incident was vastly different from the statement issued by the police.According to Lyte, “there were two vehicles, the black vehicle which had the now three deceased in the front which was being followed by the silver [police] vehicle. The damaged unmarked police vehicleThe eyewitness claimed to have heard “banging” sounds and upon looking west, observed that the road had been blocked off by police and the lone two vehicles were travelling east along the Seawall road when gunfire erupted.“The car in front stopped, the driver of the silver car got out walked to him, put him [Assanah] on the ground, was actually assaulting him on the ground and then after that there was gunfire…at the time the gunfire erupted he (officer) was physically standing over the guy who was on the ground,” Lyte said through his attorney. He also recounted that the driver of the black car was “on the ground being physically assaulted for more than ten minutes before the gunfire erupted” resulting in the death of the three men.The self proclaimed eyewitness also alleged that there was “no motorcycle which disappeared with any pillion rider or any mysterious rider,” as said by the police. At the conference today, Ramnarine posited that since making his statement public, Lyte has not made any effort to visit the Police CID Headquarters to be interrogated by investigators.President David Granger has since ordered that an investigation be conducted into the killing of the three suspected bandits. It was rumored earlier this year that Intel would be adding Core i5 and Core i7 processors to its tiny Next Unit of Computing (NUC) boxes. And the Core i5 NUC has finally put in an appearance along with improved connectivity.Until now you’ve had two options in terms of chips inside an NUC: a 1.1Ghz Celeron or 1.8GHz Core i3. Connectivity has also been limited to USB 2.0 and dual HDMI ports (or one HDMI and one Thunderbolt). The new model is already being offered by Logic Supply and comes with a 1.8GHz Core i5 processor. But connectivity has been greatly improved, too.The official model number is D53427RKE and it uses a Core i5 3427U chip complete with Intel HD4000 Graphics. Support for RAM remains the same as previous models and tops out at 16GB (DDR3 1600/1333/1066 SO-DIMM). In terms of connectivity, you now get access to a single USB 3.0 port on the front of the unit, as well as two Mini DisplayPort connections, a HDMI 1.4a port, and two USB 2.0 ports on the back. The Core i3 NUC can be picked up for around $289 complete with case, but this new model will set you back $399 just for the board. You can’t use an existing NUC case with it due to the ports being different, but it shouldn’t take long for both fan-assisted and fanless enclosures to appear.Intel’s NUCs are by no means cheap, but then there’s nothing to really compete with the performance on offer here in such a small package. And with the addition of this Core i5 model, an NUC can genuinely be a desktop replacement for office tasks and web surfing. It’s also going to make for a great media center box. So if Iceland win 1-0, the Argentine side will need to prevail by at least two goals, and so on.If both games end in draws, Nigeria will progress. In order for Iceland to progress, they need to beat Croatia and hope Nigeria either draw or lose to Argentina by as many or less goals than they beat the Croats by. Agfa HealthCare’s IMPAX 6.4 offers an improved navigation workflow for large CT and MR datasets for radiologists, clinicians and other healthcare professionals, introducing new workflow features that include ‘Active Target’, a tool that simplifies multi planar, cross sectional navigation and replaces the traditional ‘stack’ navigation to view areas of interest in all planes simultaneously. IMPAX 6.4 also includes the ‘Auto Link’ feature which automatically links ‘like series’ within one study to make navigation through numerous series more efficient. To enact comparative navigation across multiple studies, IMPAX 6.4 provides cross study series linking. All of these features employ graphical indications to ensure users are aware of where they are in a particular series when navigating. To help manage the distribution of results for large studies, IMPAX 6.4 introduces a ‘Key Image workflow’ that automates the presentation of those key images via clinical views and through EPR applications.
