“You can be sure that for us this is something that we keep in the agenda. It is not a forgotten situation,” said Mr. Guterres at a press conference, alongside Petro Poroshenko, the President of Ukraine. “The human rights bodies of the UN are, of course, active in relation to the situation, and, as it is known, the High Commissioner [for human rights] will be providing also his report on the human rights situation in Crimea in due time,” he noted. He added that the UN is ready to support all efforts, including those of the Normandy Four, the Trilateral Contact Group and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). In his remarks, the Secretary-General also highlighted the UN’s support to humanitarian activities in the country and said that it would enhance its cooperation with the Government and that it will work to overcome any challenges in reaching the populations in distress. More than 1.7 million people have been displaced in Ukraine since the start of the conflict. RELATED: Conflict in Ukraine enters fourth year ‘with no end in sight’ – UN reportMr. Guterres also said that UN fully supported the reform process of the Government and that he has closely followed developments in that regard. “As the President mentioned, we are ready to upscale our cooperation and our presence to support the Government in the reforms that [it] will be promoting,” he added. Further in his remarks, the Secretary-General expressed appreciation to the cooperation between Ukraine and the UN as well as the country’s contributions to the UN peacekeeping efforts and to global peace and security as a member of the Security Council. “Ukraine has been actively engaged in all processes in relation to both peace and security, sustainable and inclusive development, and human rights, and I want to express my deep appreciation for what has been an exemplary cooperation,” he said. Also in his remarks, Mr. Guterres recalled his link with the people of Ukraine during his tenure as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. “I started to work with them as High Commissioner for Refugees, and I want to say that I deeply feel the suffering of the people and I am deeply committed to do everything I can in order to be able to address their plight,” he stated. read more
Solid performance for new light commercial vehicle sector in February with demand steady at 13,891Market for small and mid-sized vans down as operators move to bigger vehicles.Strong growth in heavy segment, with demand for 2.5-3.5T vans up by 6.2%.4 March, 2016 The new van market achieved a steady performance in February, with registrations at the same level as this time last year, when the sector recorded a seven-year high. 13,891 new light commercial vehicles (LCVs) were registered in February – traditionally one of the quietest months of the year.Registrations of new vans below 2.0 tonnes and between 2.0-2.5 tonnes fell by 10.5% and 23.9% respectively in the month, but this was offset by an uplift of 6.2% in the 2.5-3.5 segment as demand for heavier vehicles continued to grow.Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “After a record-breaking year for new van registrations in 2015, it was inevitable that such rapid growth would level off. The market’s performance so far this year is in line with expectations, and although further stabilisation is expected over the coming months, this is a sector in good health – with February’s figures still at high levels.”Download the release and charts in full.Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window) read more
Then-sophomore forward Max McCormick (17) takes a shot during a game against Michigan Feb. 23 at the Schottenstein Center. OSU lost, 6-3.Credit: Shelby Lum / Photo editorThe Ohio State men’s hockey team opened its 2013-2014 campaign with a bang, routing the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, 9-1, in an exhibition game. The Saturday game was the Buckeyes’ first under coach Steve Rohlik, who took over as head coach in April, and he said he thought the team performed well.“Any time you can go out there and win, that’s important, but it is how we played that was the biggest takeaway from this game,” Rohlik said. “We played hard and unselfish. Our guys executed well today.”OSU’s nine goals came on 41 shots, compared to the Varsity Blues’ 19 shots. Twelve Buckeyes had at least one point, with seven scoring multiple times.Junior forward Tanner Fritz led the team with four points on two goals — both of which came in the second period — and two assists in the game. Following closely behind him was sophomore defenseman Craig Dalrymple, who tallied two goals and an assist for three points. Senior forward Alex Szczechura, junior forward Max McCormick and junior defenseman Justin DaSilva each contributed three points on a goal and two assists, and senior forward Alex Lippincott hit the back of the net twice.Fritz said the team’s offensive play was solid, which he attributed to the unit being able to keep the puck low and wearing down Toronto’s defensive team. He said the team’s defense was a contributing factor to the victory as well.“Offensively, we put up really good numbers, but I think we’re a strong enough defensive unit that I think both of them kind of fed off each other,” Fritz said.Lippincott said a big component of the team’s victory was that it played as a cohesive unit.“Everybody was making a play and everybody was contributing,” he said.Time in the net was split between sophomore Collin Olson and freshman Matt Tompkins. Olson played the first 31:01, making eight saves on nine shots, and Tompkins was a perfect 10-for-10 in the final 28:59 of the game. The Buckeyes took control early in the first period after a goal from Dalrymple at 9:54. Afterward, a rebuttal from Toronto third-year forward Michael Markovic at 13:42 off his own rebound tied the game. OSU answered with a goal from McCormick on a power play conversion. The Buckeyes outshot the Varsity Blues in the period, 11-8.Led by Fritz’s two goals, the second period saw the Buckeyes hit the back of the net four times and extend their lead to 6-1. Fritz’s first came at 5:04 with help from Szczechura, and he scored again with an unassisted goal at 14:53. Lippincott added two of his own with back-to-back goals at 6:33 and 13:15. His first came with the help of DaSilva and junior forward Chad Niddery, and assists from DaSilva and senior forward Travis Statchuk allowed him to put the puck in the back of the net for the second time. OSU once again led Toronto in shots taken, firing 16 at the net, while the Varsity Blues only managed to get four off.OSU carried the momentum into the third period, scoring twice in the first two minutes on goals from Szczechura and Dalrymple at 42 seconds and 1:52, respectively. The Buckeyes’ 14 third-period shots bested the Varsity Blues’ seven. As the Buckeyes come off a 9-1 victory and head into practice to prepare to face Miami (Ohio) in their regular season opener, Fritz said the team can’t be complacent.“It’s definitely a confidence builder, but we can’t just let it give us a big ego into Miami because we know they’re a great team,” Fritz said. “We’re going to go in level-headed and start the (regular) season off right.”The Buckeyes’ regular season-opener with the Redhawks is slated for Friday at 7:05 p.m. at the Jerome Schottenstein Center. read more
My, how things have changed. The last time the Ohio State men’s basketball team played Purdue, the Buckeyes were fighting to sustain what seemed like long-shot Big Ten championship hopes. The Buckeyes arrived in West Lafayette, Ind., at 1-3 in conference play. With four minutes remaining in the game, OSU was down 10 and facing the virtual death sentence of a 1-4 conference record. But the Buckeyes had other plans. They ended the game on an 18-4 run and stole a season-saving road win. It was the start of a nine-game, in-conference win streak that has left the Buckeyes tied with Michigan State for first place in the Big Ten.A month later, OSU (20-6, 10-3) and Purdue (21-3, 9-3) meet tonight at the Schottenstein Center in a game with heavy Big Ten title implications. The No. 9 Buckeyes have reached the AP poll’s Top 10 for the first time in three years. The No. 4 Boilermakers are right behind OSU in the conference standings, tied for third. If the Buckeyes expect to beat the Boilermakers tonight, they may need to do a better job of stopping Purdue junior Robbie Hummel. Although they survived the last encounter, Hummel torched the OSU 1-3-1 zone for 29 first-half points. It was not until coach Thad Matta assigned junior David Lighty to shadow Hummel that the Buckeyes were able to slow him down.As they have done all season, OSU will likely employ both zone and man-to-man defenses tonight, but their ability to stop Hummel will be crucial.“He’s a blue collar-type kid and he’s a great leader,” junior Evan Turner said of Hummel. “He can walk the walk and really set the tone for Purdue. He plays hard and he plays with a passion.”A Buckeye win would allow them to keep pace with Michigan State and keep their conference title hopes alive. Although most OSU fans will keep a close eye on the Spartans in the home stretch of the season, Matta said his focus is and always had been squarely on his team.“You’ve got to keep your focus on you,” Matta said. “I’ve been fortunate with some conference championships and my mind has always been the same. Let’s keep it on us and control the things that we can control.”This isn’t the first time his team has been in contention for a conference title. He led the Buckeyes to outright regular season titles in 2006 and 2007. However, with the exception of junior David Lighty, none of the players on this year’s team have been a part of those championship teams. For Turner, the opportunity is one that he and his teammates have embraced.“I definitely think about the opportunity, but at the same time I’m not really nervous,” Turner said. “You have to go in prepared, have confidence and have an attack mentality.”He and the rest of the Buckeyes know that all eyes will be on Columbus tonight. Considering what’s at stake, OSU’s battle with Purdue has the potential to be one of the year’s best games, not only in the Big Ten, but in all of college basketball.Like Turner, Lighty said his team knows what’s at stake.“It’s up to us,” Lighty said. “It’s in our hands to go and get the Big Ten championship.” read more
Andrew Bauer, the union’s deputy director of policy, added: “The Scottish Government has taken the decision to allow the reintroduction and studies on habitats and an appropriate management plan are currently under discussion with stakeholders, including NFUS. “Statistically, it was always likely that there would be small pockets of land where the environmental benefit might outweigh the problems being caused.“However, any benefits seen in localised areas must be viewed against the considerable damage from beaver activity on productive farmland, drainage systems, long standing flood banks and established woodland on large parts of Tayside.”Farmers in Angus have complained that beavers are causing huge damage to drainage channels which are vital for farming. Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp? Sign up to our free twice-daily Front Page newsletter and new audio briefings. Dr Alan Law, co-author of the university report, said beavers offered an innovative, more hands-off, solution to the problem of wetland loss “provided their populations are suitably managed and protected”.He added: ”Seeing what beavers can do for our wetlands and countryside highlights the diverse landscape we have been missing for the last 400 years.”However, a spokesman for the National Farmers’ Union expressed concern about beaver numbers and said the illegal release of the animals on Tayside meant they were now found on waterways stretching through 1.2 million acres of land in Perthshire, Angus and Fife. A beaver gnawing at a treeCredit:Alamy Farmers have warned that beavers are causing considerable damage on productive farmland after researchers suggested the large rodents could help restore wetlands and boost biodiversity.A study by the University of Stirling looked at the effects of a small group of Eurasian beavers on a wetland in Tayside that was originally drained for farming. They said that over a period of 12 years local plant richness rose by 46 per cent and the total number of plant species recorded more than doubled.Prof Nigel Willby, of Stirling University, said wetlands were tremendously important environments for biodiversity and were disappearing at an “alarming” rate.He added: “Beavers are renowned for their engineering skills, like dam building, and are now being considered as tools for restoring wetlands.”They have been reintroduced widely, including in Scotland, partly for this purpose and our findings demonstrate the surprisingly large benefits they can bring to biodiversity.” Ministers announced in November that two groups of beavers, including around 200 living on Tayside, between Loch Tay and the Fife coast, would be given formal protection and allowed to spread naturally. The decision also affects a small group of beavers that were the subject of a reintroduction trial in Argyll.Local farmers criticised the move at the time and warned that they must be allowed to cull the mammals where they threaten agricultural land by felling trees and blocking ditches. A beaver kit in the reintroduction trial in ArgyllCredit:PA The study, partly-funded by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), was published in the international journal Science of the Total Environment. It said that between 2003 and 2015, the beavers constructed 640ft of dams, 1,640ft of canals and an acre of ponds, surrounded by a mosaic of vegetation which increased in complexity by 71 per cent. read more

Soeren Stache/Getty Images Some of the workers saw video of a man being stabbed to death. Others viewed acts of bestiality or animals being tortured. Suicides and beheadings popped up too.The reason for watching the gruesome content: to determine whether it should be pulled from Facebook before more members of the world’s largest social network could see it.Content moderators protect Facebook’s 2.3 billion users from exposure to humanity’s darkest impulses. Scouring posts that’ve been flagged by other members of the social network or by the Silicon Valley giant’s artificial intelligence tools, they quickly decide what stays up and what comes down. But reviewing the posts comes with a cost. Constant exposure to violence, hatred and sordid acts can wreak havoc on a person’s mental health. Former content moderators have already filed a lawsuit against Facebook in which they say repeated exposure to violent images caused psychological trauma. There’s a reason being a content moderator has been called “the worst job in technology.”It’s also an important job, and one that isn’t handled by Facebook employees. Instead, it’s outsourced to contractors, some of whom turn to drugs and sex in the workplace to distract themselves from the abhorrent images they see every day, according to a February story in The Verge, which reported that some of the workers make as little as $28,800 per year. That’s just over the federal poverty level for a family of four. Facebook said in May that it plans to raise the minimum hourly wage for contract workers, which is currently $15 per hour. Details of the working conditions of content moderators are still coming out. On Wednesday, The Verge reported that a content moderator who worked at a site in Florida operated by Cognizant died after having a heart attack at his desk. The site in Tampa was reportedly a stressful, dirty and unhealthy environment. Cognizant says that it works to “ensure a safe, clean, and supportive work environment.”Contracting in the tech industry has reached a flashpoint, escalating tensions in Silicon Valley’s world of haves and have-nots. Contractors and temps don’t get the health care or retirement benefits that full-time employees do, a difference that hasn’t gone unnoticed. Last year, contract workers at Google protested, demanding higher wages and benefits.Facebook said Wednesday it works with its contractors “to provide a level of support and compensation that leads the industry.” The social media giant also said its thoughts go out to family, friends and co-workers of the deceased moderator.”There will inevitably be employee challenges or dissatisfaction that call our commitment to this work and our partners’ employees into question,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement. “When the circumstances warrant action on the part of management, we make sure it happens.”Here’s a look at five of the companies that have worked with Facebook to police content.CognizantA multinational provider of services to technology, finance, health care, retail and other companies, Cognizant offers services including app development, consulting, information technology and digital strategy.Based in Teaneck, New Jersey, Cognizant has roughly 281,600 employees around the world, according to its annual report. Nearly 70 percent of its workforce is in India. The company’s role in supporting Facebook’s content moderation activities was the subject of recent stories in The Verge, which reported that roughly 1,000 Cognizant employees at its Phoenix office evaluate posts for potentially violating Facebook rules against hate speech, violence and terrorism. Madhu Kapparath/Getty Images The workers get two 15-minute breaks, a 30-minute lunch and nine minutes of “wellness time” per day. They also have access to counselors and a hotline, according to the report.Still, some workers said that constant exposure to depravity has taken its toll. One former content moderator said he started to believe conspiracy theories, such as 9/11 being a hoax, after reviewing videos promoting the idea that the terrorist attack was faked. The former employee said he had brought a gun to work because he feared that fired employees would return to the office to harm those who still had jobs. Cognizant said in February it looked into “specific workplace issues raised in a recent report,” that it had “previously taken action where necessary” and that it has “steps in place to continue to address these concerns and any others raised by our employees.”The company outlined the resources it offers employees, including wellness classes, counselors and a 24-hour hotline.Cognizant also runs a site in Tampa, Florida that employs about 800 workers, according to The Verge. Workers at that facility have filed two sexual harassment complaints against coworkers since April. “Like any large employer, Cognizant routinely and professionally responds to and addresses general workplace and personnel issues in its facilities,” Cognizant said in a statement on Wednesday. “Our Tampa facility is no different. Cognizant works hard to ensure a safe, clean, and supportive work environment for all of our associates.”PRO UnlimitedBased in Boca Raton, Florida, PRO Unlimited provides services and software used by clients in more than 90 countries. Last year, Selena Scola, a former PRO Unlimited employee, who worked as a Facebook content moderator, filed a lawsuit alleging that she suffered from psychological trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder caused by viewing thousands of disturbing images of violence. Scola’s PTSD symptoms can pop up when she hears loud noises or touches a computer mouse, according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit was amended to include two more former content moderators who worked at Facebook through staffing companies. “Her symptoms are also triggered when she recalls or describes graphic imagery she was exposed to as a content moderator,” the lawsuit states, referring to Scola.Filed in superior court in Northern California’s San Mateo County, the lawsuit alleges Facebook violated California law by creating dangerous working conditions. Facebook content moderators are asked to review more than 10 million posts per week that may violate the social network’s rules, according to the lawsuit, which seeks class-action status. At the time the original lawsuit was filed, Facebook acknowledged the work can be stressful and said it requires the company it works with for content moderation to provide support such as counseling and relaxation areas.Facebook in a court filing denied Scola’s allegations and called for the case to be dismissed. A Facebook spokeswoman said the social media giant no longer uses PRO Unlimited for content moderation. PRO Unlimited didn’t respond to a request for comment.AccentureOne of the most prestigious consultancies in the world, Dublin-based Accenture has more than 459,000 people serving clients across 40 industries and in more than 120 countries, according to its website.People enter an Accenture office in downtown Helsinki. Jussi Nukari/Getty Images In February, Facebook content reviewers at an Accenture facility in Austin, Texas, complained about a “Big Brother” environment, alleging they weren’t allowed to use their phones at their desk or take “wellness” breaks during the first and last hour of their shift, according to a memo obtained by Business Insider. “Despite our pride in our work, Content Moderators have a secondary status in [the] hierarchy of the workplace, both within the Facebook and the Accenture structure,” the memo read. Accenture didn’t respond to a request for comment. At the time, Facebook said there had been a “misunderstanding” and that content moderators are encouraged to take wellness breaks at any time throughout the day. Some of Accenture’s clients have included other tech giants such as Google, Microsoft and Amazon. More than three-quarters of Fortune Global 500 companies work with Accenture. ArvatoOne of Facebook’s largest content moderation centers is in Germany, a country that started enforcing a strict hate speech law last year that would fine social media companies up to 50 million euros ($58 million) if they didn’t pull down hate speech and other offensive content quickly enough. Arvato, owned by the German media company Bertelsmann, runs a content moderation center in Berlin. The company has faced complaints about working conditions and the toll the job takes on workers’ mental health. In 2017, Arvato said in a statement that it takes the well-being of its employees seriously and provides health care and access to company doctors, psychologists and social services. The company, based in Gütersloh, Germany, has 70,000 employees in more than 40 countries. It’s been providing Facebook with content moderation services since 2015. Arvato, which was rebranded last week as Majorel, said it offers content moderators a salary that’s 20 percent above minimum wage and support such as wellness classes and counselors. Workers can also take “resiliency breaks” at any time of the day.”We are proud to be a partner of Facebook and work in alignment with them to offer a competitive compensation package that includes a comprehensive benefits package,” a company spokesperson said in a statement. “We will continue to work together to improve our offerings and support of our employees.” GenpactNew York-based professional services firm Genpact won a contract with Facebook last year to provide content moderation, according to The Economic Times.Concerns about the mental health of Facebook content moderators weren’t enough to scare off applicants in India, who flocked to jobs that paid between 225,000 and 400,000 rupees a year (about $3,150-$5,600). Genpact was searching for content moderators fluent in Tamil, Punjabi and other Indian languages. Some Genpact workers have complained about low pay and a stressful work environment, according to a report this week by Reuters. One former Genpact employee told the news outlet that at least three times he’s “seen women employees breaking down on the floor, reliving the trauma of watching suicides real-time.”Facebook pushed back against allegations of low pay but outlined the work it was doing to improve working conditions for content moderators. In an email, a Genpact spokesperson confirmed that it partners with Facebook but said it doesn’t comment on work with clients. “As a company we bring our extensive experience in the field of content review and operations to our partners by providing industry-leading support for our team of content reviewers and a best-in-class working environment,” the Genpact spokesperson said in a statement. “We take very seriously this work and the services that we provide to our clients.”First published on March 1 at 4:00 a.m. PTUpdate, 4:03 p.m. PT: Includes new material from Facebook about PRO Unlimited. Cutlery18%12% The GST tax structure for various services has been devised under four broad slabs — 5, 12, 18 and 28 percent — along with a cess on luxury and demerit goods such as tobacco, pan masala and aerated drinks. The GST plan envisages that the Centre compensate the states for revenue losses from abolition of taxes like the VAT (value added tax), octroi and implementation of GST. The compensation from the Centre to the states will be met through levy of a ‘GST Compensation Cess’ on luxury items and goods like tobacco, during the first five years of implementation of the GST regime.Filing limits raisedJaitley said that the limit under the GST Composition Scheme has been raised to Rs 75 lakh. Taxpayers coming under this scheme will be required to file summarized returns on a quarterly basis, instead of three monthly returns. Under the scheme, a registered taxpayer will pay tax at a rate not more than 1 percent for manufacturers, 2.5 percent for restaurants and 0.5 percent for other traders. The GST Composition Scheme was introduced under GST law to lower the burden of compliance for small businesses, where assessees have to pay tax at a minimum rate based on their turnover. This is similar to the provisions in VAT law. Any assessee who deals only in supply of goods can opt for this scheme, which means this provision is not applicable for service providers. However, restaurant service providers are excluded.Only businesses participating in intra-state supply of goods are eligible to enter the GST Composition Scheme. Most services, except those in the negative list of essential services such as healthcare and education, are expected to come under GST. In this file photo, he addresses a GST Council meeting held in Srinagar last month.IANSMoving to placate key sectors of the industry which have raised concerns about the high rates of taxes under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime eating into their operational viability, the GST Council on Sunday announced that it is revising the GST rate on 66 categories of goods and services.Addressing a press conference after the 16th GST Council meeting, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that the reductions were based on the two major principles of maintaining equivalence and the change in utilisation behavior. The Council’s move is expected to come as a relief to small and medium enterprises in trading and manufacturing as well as restaurants. Under the revised tax rate scheme, packaged food like vegetables, pickles and sauces, as well as dental wax, insulin, agarbattis, school bags, exercise and colouring books for children, cutlery and computer printers will be cheaper by 6-10 per cent (see chart). The new tax rates proposed for goods and services under the GST rollout planned for July 1 are expected to come bundled with a range of cesses on luxury and premium goods as well as on tobacco and high-end liquors. The Finance Ministry tweeted on Sunday that it had received representations for about 133 items, out of which rates have been reduced on 66 items.Cinema gets a breatherBesides, reductions will be carried out on two categories of GST rates which were planned to be imposed on cinema-goers – 28 per cent tax will be levied on tickets priced at above Rs 100 and 18 percent on tickets costing up to Rs 100.This notwithstanding, single-screen cinemas are likely to be hit the hardest by the proposed 28 percent tax rate.Jaitley later said on the Twitter handle of the Union Ministry of Finance that the new concessions would come at the cost of revenues. “FM @arunjaitley said that rates on goods decided today would make the goods cheaper for common man but may cost to revenue of Govt,” the finance ministry tweeted. For workers in industries like textiles and diamond processing where the workers take their work home, tax rate will be revised to 5 percent from the 18 percent currently being charged. This is owing to GST for these sectors being revised as well.Till date, the GST Council has fixed rates of more than 1,200 goods and 500 services. Last Saturday, it finalised rates for a few contentious goods such as gold and jewellery, agricultural implements, biscuits, footwear and textiles.A few of the items on which tax rates were revised at Sunday’s GST Council meeting:ItemsItemsOld rateOld rateNew or revised rateNew or revised rateItemsPackaged goods (vegetables, pickles, sauces)Old rate18%New or revised rate12%ItemsCashewOld rate12%New or revised rate5%ItemsAgarbattiOld rate12%New or revised rate5%ItemsDental waxOld rate28%New or revised rate8%ItemsInsulinOld rate12%New or revised rate5%ItemsPlastic beadsOld rate28%New or revised rate18%ItemsPlastic tarpaulinOld rate28%New or revised rate18%ItemsSchool bagsOld rate28%New or revised rate18%ItemsExercise booksOld rate28%New or revised rate12%ItemsColouring booksOld rate12%New or revised rateNilItemsPre-cast concrete pipesOld rate28%New or revised rate18%ItemsCutleryOld rate18%New or revised rate12%ItemsTractor componentsOld rate28%New or revised rate18%ItemsComputer printersOld rate28%New or revised rate18% Plastic beads28%18% Colouring books12%Nil Computer printers28%18% Packaged goods (vegetables, pickles, sauces)18%12% Cashew12%5% Dental wax28%8% Insulin12%5% Tractor components28%18% Agarbatti12%5% ItemsOld rateNew or revised rate read more

Take any major conference that happened this year, Google I/O, Apple’s WWDC, or Microsoft Build. A major focus of all these conferences by top-notch tech leaders is improving User experience, smoothing out the process of how a user experiences their products. In present times, the user experience is heavily dependent on how a system interacts with a human. It may be either through responsive web designs, or appealing architectures. It may also be through an interactive module, such as a conversational UI, a chatbot, or a voice interface—essentially the same thing albeit with slight changes in their definition. Irrespective of they are called, these UX models have one fixed goal: to improve the interaction between a human, and a system, such that it feels real. In our recently conducted Packt Skill-up survey 2018, we asked developers and tech pros about whether Conversational User Interfaces and chatbots are going to be the future for web UI? Well, it seems yes, as over 65% of respondents, agreed that chat interactions and Conversational User Interfaces are the future of the web. After the recent preview of the power of Google Duplex, those numbers might be even higher if asked again today. Why has this paradigm of interacting with the web shifted from text and even visual searches on mobile to Voice, Natural language, and conversation UI? Why is Apple’s Siri, Google’s Voice assistant, Microsoft’s Cortana, Amazon Echo, releasing new versions every day? Computing power & NLP, the two pillars Any chatbot, or voice interface, requires two major factors to make them successful. One being computational power, which makes a conversational UI process complex calculations. And natural language processing, which actually makes a chatbot conduct human-like conversations. Both these areas have made tremendous progress in the recent times. A large number of computational chips namely GPUs, TPUs, as well as quantum computers, are being developed, which are capable of processing complex calculations in a jiffy. NLP has also gained momentum both in speech recognition capabilities (understanding language) and artificial intelligence (learning from experience). As technology in these areas expands, it paves way for companies to adopt conversational UIs as their main user interface. The last thing we need is more apps There are already a very large number of apps (read millions) available in app stores and they are increasing every day. We are almost at the peak of the hype cycle. And there is only downfall from here. Why? Well, I’m sure, you’ll agree, downloading, setting up, and managing an app is a hassle, not to mention, humans have limited attention spans, so switching between multiple apps happens quite often. Conversational UIs are rapidly taking up the vacuum left behind by mobile apps. They integrate functionalities of multiple apps in one. So you have a simple messaging app, which can also book cabs, search, and shop or order food. Moreover, they can simplify routine tasks. AI enabled chatbots, can remind you of scheduled meetings, bring up the news for you every morning, analyze your refrigerator for food items to be replenished, and update your shopping cart, all with simple commands. Advancements in deep learning have also produced, what are known as therapist bots. Users can confide in bots just as they do with human friends when they have a broken heart, have lost a job, or have been feeling down. (This view does assume that the service provider respects the users’ privacy and adheres to strict policies related to data privacy and protection.) The end of screen-based interfaces Another flavor of Conversational UI is the Voice User interfaces (VUI). Typically, we interact with a device directly through a touchscreen or indirectly with a remote control. However, VUI is the touch-less version of technology where you only need to think aloud with your voice. These interfaces can work solo, like Amazon Echo, or Google Home or be combined with text-based chatbots, like Apple Siri, Google voice assistant etc. You simply need to say a command or type it, and the task is done. “Siri, Text Robert, I’m running late for the meeting.” And boy! Are voice user interfaces growing rapidly! Google Duplex, announced at Google I/O 2018, can even make phone calls for the users imitating human natural conversation almost perfectly. In Fact, it also adds pause-fillers and phrases such as “um”, “uh-huh “, and “erm” to make the conversation sound as natural as possible. Voice interfaces also work amazingly for people with disabilities including Visual imparities. Users, who are unable to use screens and keyboards, can use VUI for their dat-to-day tasks. Here’s a touching review of Amazon Echo shared by a wheelchair-bound user about how the device changed his life. The world is being swept over by the wave of Conversational UI, Google duplex being the latest example. As AI deepens its roots, across the technology ecosystem, intelligent assistant applications like, Siri, Duplex, Cortana will advance. This boom will push us closer to Zero UI, a seamless and interactive UI which eradicates the barrier between user and device. Source = e-Travel Blackboard: G.A “Travel agents can turn the interest rate discussion into sales conversion,” says AFTA’s Westbury Australia’s travel agents should use the recently announced interest rate drop to convert queries into firm sales, says The Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA) chief executive Jayson Westbury. Mr Westbury told e-Travel Blackboard that travel agents can mention the interest rate drop to clients in much the same way they would the buying power of the Australian dollar. “Travel agents can turn the interest rate discussion into sales conversion,” he said. According to Mr Westbury, while official interest rate cuts have not historically had a “material impact on a person’s decision to travel in the short term”, should the rate cut be maintained, Mr Westbury said a growth in consumer confidence may result in more travel. Flight comparison website cheapflights.com.au expect the rate cut announcement to boost Australia’s strong outbound travel record, referring to figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics: “Figures show a 35 per cent increase in the number of overseas holidays taken in the past three years. least in BJP-run states 24/7 power becomes a reality by December 2016 Related News In my last article ‘100 day challenge’ (IE June 16) I suggested actions that could restore investor confidence and boost industrial and economic growth Of course economic growth is only an instrument for improving well being For that the government needs to take measures to provide electricity clean water fuel and air effective and affordable healthcare quality education and skills connectivity through roads and internet and quick and inexpensive justice Only when these are attained can the aspirations of the people for “achhe din” be considered fulfilled It is a five- or 10-year agenda but measures taken in the first 100 days can create confidence Some are as follows: One initiate a National Jyotigram Yojana for 24/7 power supply Power round the clock at stable voltage can stimulate productive activities in rural areas to generate employment As the share of agricultural GDP has come down to around 15 per cent substantial employment in rural areas needs to be generated in non-farm activities Gujarat provided 24/7 electricity to its 18000- plus villages in two and a half years The UPA’s Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana has yet to match that after 10 years The government should ensure that at least in BJP-run states 24/7 power becomes a reality by December 2016 The advantage of 24/7 power goes to households too In Gujarat some households with LPG cylinders prefer to use induction cookers because it is convenient and less expensive Considering the need to provide clean cooking fuels to protect against the adverse impact of indoor air pollution resulting from cooking with fuelwood and dung cakes and the difficulty of delivering LPG to all households on a regular basis this is an attractive option Two action must be taken toclean up the Ganga Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised to clean up the river In 2008 I had reviewed the Ganga Action Plan launched in 1984 for the Supreme Court After nearly 25 years the Ganga is more polluted in terms of the coliform count Many cities had sewage treatment plants of inadequate capacities because they were delayed and populations were larger than projected Just about half the collected sewage was treated and large sections of population were not connected to the sewerage system Some were not properly maintained for want of funds If the Ganga or any river has to be cleaned up these issues have to be taken care of Ensure that everyone is connected to the sewerage system that sewage treatment plants of adequate capacity keeping in mind likely population growth are built in time adequate resources are provided to operate and maintain them by imposing an appropriate sewage treatment charge effluent standards are strictly enforced on all industrial units discharging effluents in the river open defecation is eliminated and farmers use fertilisers and pesticides in ways that minimise contamination of runoff This is a huge task and the cost may seem large but compared to the costs on public health it is small A determined government can accomplish much of it in five years if it begins in earnest as soon as possible Three air quality in cities must be improved The World Health Organisation has labelled Delhi one of the most polluted cities in the world The adverse impact on health calls for action to improve air quality in our cities The major contributor to air pollution is motorised vehicles particularly diesel ones the share of which is increasing due to diesel subsidy Car ownership is increasing at a rapid pace and will accelerate with faster growth A major step that needs to be taken is implementing Euro VI standards on automobile emissions by 2020 Currently we are almost a decade behind European standards The automobile industry will point to higher costs but owners should bear that cost and not the average citizen through dirty air The government should announce a roadmap to clean up our air Four ensure equality of opportunity through quality education Free compulsory education for eight years has no meaning if it is not quality education A major problem is teacher absenteeism To correct this teachers should be made accountable to a local education committee consisting of parents and panchayat representatives The committee should have a major say in a teacher’s transfer salary and promotions Also with 24/7 electricity and internet connectivity computerised instruction can be used to improve the effectiveness of teaching A three-year-old from a socially disadvantaged family has a far smaller vocabulary and lower cognitive development than a child of professional parents This disadvantage persists To overcome this anganwadis have to be made places of learning and excitement Again programmes like Sesame Street in the US or Gali Gali Sim Sim its Indian version are found to be effective in overcoming some of this disadvantage We need to develop new tools and programmes that can make anganwadis places where disadvantages in vocabulary and cognitive development can be overcome Five there must be quick and affordable justice for all Judicial delays are a major contributor to corruption and poor governance Judicial reforms are vital to make justice quick and inexpensive Only then can all Indians feel they live in a just society A committee on how to make justice quick and inexpensive should be instituted and made to give recommendations in six months Six promote agricultural growth to contain inflation Gujarat has had nearly 10 per cent growth in agricultural GDP for a decade This has been ascribed to the use of GM cotton the diversification of cash crops made feasible by roads that connect farmers to organised markets the soil health-card scheme and to a large number of check dams and groundwater recharge schemes This can be replicated in many parts of the country Increasing agricultural output is critical to containing food price inflation which has been a major contributor to the consumer price index over recent years Increase in the production of fruits and vegetables reducing wastage improving their distribution so that farmers get a higher price and consumers pay a lower price are all possible by reforming the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee Act The government will find it easier to take tough decisions in the first 100 days Many policy decisions show positive impact after two or three years If decisions are taken now the government can reap political rewards in time for the next election There is also the danger that with its comfortable majority the government may feel complacent and postpone tough decisions which never get taken This happened to Indira Gandhi after the 1971 election and to Rajiv Gandhi after the 1984 election The Modi government should hit the ground running and take action in all these areas The writer is chairman Integrated Research and Action for Development (IRADe) and Inspector General of Police Naunihal Singh and his kin amassing properties worth crores through benami transactions in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday issued notices to four respondents — CBI Punjab Vigilance Bureau Naunihal Singh his father-in-law and former Haryana advocate general Hawa Singh Hooda Hearing a petition filed by Ludhiana resident Jaswinder Pal Singh Walia a division bench comprising Chief Justice Shiavax Jal Vazifdar and Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal directed all the respondents to file their replies by March 29 Others who have been issued notices include Naunihal’s brother and Gujarat cadre IAS officer Roopwant Singh Directorate of Enforcement and Union Ministry of Home Affairs Watch:International Powerboat Race Launch Dramatically Halted By JCB Trucks It was on July 6 2015 that the High Court on Walia’s petition had directed the Punjab Vigilance Bureau director to conduct a detailed probe into the allegations within six months and if required to take further appropriate action in the case The Vigilance Bureau had given a clean chit to Naunihal and his kin but now Walia in his petition has alleged that the Vigilance Bureau had conducted a one-sided inquiry and given a clean chit to Naunihal and his aides Walia has sought directions to set aside the Vigilance Bureau’s inquiry report and to hand over the case to the CBI and the ED for further investigation under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Money Laundering Act The petitioner in his 1635-page petition has also attached sale deeds of the properties purchased by Naunihal and his kin in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh The petitioner has mentioned that the Vigilance Bureau report’s para 171 though mentions “an individual can own only 373 acres of dry land under the Land Ceiling Act of Tamil Nadu and that Sh Naunihal Singh owns 4967 acres of dry land but still fails to initiate any action on him and his aides” Walia has submitted that the Vigilance Bureau’s report mentions that Naunihal owns 1739 acres of land in Andhra Pradesh But it is factually incorrect as is apparent from sub-para (xi) of para no 71 wherein the Vigilance Bureau director has mentioned that “Naunihal Singh has further given intimation under Rule 16 of the All India (Conduct) rules 1968 to the Punjab government regarding purchase of 52 acres of land in district Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh for a sum of Rs 32 lakh” The petitioner has alleged that similarly 30 acres of land is owned by Naunihal’s brother Roopwant Singh in Andhra Pradesh and two-acre land at Dera Bassi which is worth more than Rs 3 crore and 50 acre land is owned by Joga Singh paternal uncle of Naunihal in Andhra Pradesh However the Vigilance Bureau has given no credence to these astonishing facts and figures reads the petition The petitioner has submitted that he came in contact with Naunihal in 2002 when he was Ludhiana SSP and alleged that Naunihal gradually allured him to invest money with him in multi-crore land projects in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh but his land is currently in illegal possession of Naunihal He has submitted that due to this cross- FIRs have been
